Turin is a small town in Lewis County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 768 people lived there. Turin also has a village with the same name, Turin. The town is located south of Lowville, which is the main town of the county. It is north of Rome.

History of Turin

People first settled in the area around 1797. The town of Turin was officially created in 1800. It was formed from a part of the town of Mexico.

Over the years, parts of Turin were used to create other towns. In 1803, some land became part of Martinsburg. More land was added to Martinsburg in 1819. Later, in 1830, the town of West Turin was formed from another part of Turin.

On August 7, 2023, a very strong tornado (called an EF3 tornado) hit the town. It caused a lot of damage.

Geography of Turin

The town of Turin covers about 31.4 square miles (81.3 km2) in total. Most of this area, about 31.2 square miles (80.8 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.2 square mile (0.5 km2), is water.

The eastern border of the town follows the Black River. A section of the town is also located on the Tug Hill Plateau, which is a high, flat area.

Two main roads, New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 26, run through the town from north to south. They follow along the Black River. NY-12 is closer to the river.
