Lewis is a small town in Essex County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 1,382 people lived there. The town is named after Morgan Lewis, who was the governor of New York when the town was created.
Lewis is located in the northeastern part of Essex County. It is about 30 miles southwest of Burlington, Vermont. It is also 32 miles south of Plattsburgh. The town is 94 miles south of Montreal, Quebec, and 131 miles north of Albany.

History of Lewis
People started settling in the area of Lewis before the year 1798. This was near what is now Lewis village.
The town of Lewis was officially formed in 1805. It was created from a part of the town of Willsboro. Later, in 1844 and 1854, some parts of Lewis were given to the town of Elizabethtown.
In the early days, Iron mining was a very important business here. Two communities, Stowersville and Deerhead, grew because of the iron industry.
A historic building, the First Congregational Church and Cemetery, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it is a special place recognized for its history.
Notable Person from Lewis
- Joseph Call (1781–1835) was known as the "Lewis Giant." He was famous for being a very strong man and a great wrestler. Besides that, he was also a postmaster, a mill builder, a logger, and a town official. He was also a veteran from a war.
Geography of Lewis
The town of Lewis covers a total area of about 220.1 square kilometers. Most of this area, 219.6 square kilometers, is land. Only a small part, 0.5 square kilometers, is water. Rivers that flow into the Boquet River drain the town. The Boquet River then flows east into Lake Champlain.
Lewis is located inside the Adirondack Park. This is a large protected area known for its natural beauty.
A main highway, Interstate 87, also called the Northway, runs through the town. You can get onto it from Exit 32 (Stowersville Road). U.S. Route 9 is another important north-south highway that goes right through the middle of Lewis.
In 2013, a special vote called Proposition 5 was passed. This allowed New York State to trade 200 acres of land with a company called NYCO Minerals Inc. The company will use this land for mining. The land was thought to be worth about 1 million dollars.
