Port Leyden is a small village located in Lewis County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 672 people lived there. The village got its name because it used to be an important port on the Black River Canal.
Most of Port Leyden is in the town of Leyden. A smaller part of the village is east of the Black River in the town of Lyonsdale. Port Leyden is about 17 miles (27 km) south of Lowville, which is the main town of the county. It is also 8 miles (13 km) north of Boonville.

History of Port Leyden
A mill was built in the area around the year 1800. At that time, the community was known as "Kelsey's Mills." The name changed to "Port Leyden" around 1838. This happened when the Black River Canal was being built.
The canal was finished in Port Leyden by 1850. It started being used in 1851. The canal reached its northern end in Lyons Falls in 1855. Lyons Falls is just a few miles north of Port Leyden.
By 1900, people decided to stop using the canal between Lyons Falls and Boonville. This meant that Port Leyden was no longer a canal port.
Two important buildings in Port Leyden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are St. Mark's Church and the Edmund Wilson House. These places are important because of their history.
Geography of Port Leyden
Port Leyden is located in the southern part of Lewis County. Its coordinates are 43°35′2″N 75°20′39″W. The United States Census Bureau says the village covers a total area of 0.66 square miles (1.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, 0.62 square miles (1.6 square kilometers), is land. The rest, 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.
The Black River flows through the village. The river drops over 30 feet (9 meters) as it passes through Port Leyden.
New York State Route 12 runs through Port Leyden. This road goes north to Lowville and south to Boonville.
Education in Port Leyden
Port Leyden has an elementary school on Lincoln Street. This school teaches students from kindergarten through fourth grade.
Students in grades 5 through 12 go to South Lewis Central Middle/High School. This school is located in Turin.
The Port Leyden Community Library is on Canal Street. It is a place where everyone can read and learn.
