How Boost Juice Started
The person who created Boost Juice Bars is named Janine Allis. In 1999, she was on holiday in the United States. While there, she noticed that juice bars were becoming very popular. Janine and her husband, Jeff Allis, thought it would be a great idea to bring this trend to Australia.
So, in 2000, Janine opened her first Boost Juice Bar. It was on King William Street in Adelaide. She did this while she was on maternity leave, which means she had just had a baby! By the end of 2004, Boost Juice had grown quite a bit. There were 175 shops open across Australia and New Zealand.
Boost Juice Around the World
In 2007, Boost Juice shops in New Zealand closed down for a while. The company that ran them there had some problems. But Boost Juice didn't stop growing elsewhere!
Richard O'Sullivan and Mario Budwig, who started a British cookie company called Millie's Cookies, helped bring Boost Juice to the United Kingdom. By the end of that year, Boost Juice had also opened shops in Chile, Kuwait, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.
In 2008, a big food company called Nestlé teamed up with Boost Juice. They launched a range of fruit smoothies together. This happened as Boost Juice was also expanding in the United Kingdom.
Between 2009 and 2012, there was a Boost Juice shop in China. However, it had some difficulties and eventually closed.
In 2010, a company called Riverside Company bought a large part of Boost Juice. They paid about $65 million for 65% of the company. That same year, Boost Juice celebrated its tenth birthday! They launched a new slogan, "Boost the way you feel," to mark the occasion. Janine Allis also appeared on a TV show called Undercover Boss.
Later, in 2014, another company called Bain Capital bought out Riverside Company. This made Bain Capital the main owner of Boost Juice.
In 2015, Janine Allis became one of the "sharks" on the TV show Shark Tank on Network 10. On this show, business people listen to new ideas and decide if they want to invest their money.
Where Boost Juice Shops Are Today
As of June 2022, you can find Boost Juice shops in many countries. These include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Chile, Estonia, Indonesia, Latvia, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Vietnam, and Malta.
Boost Juice once tried to buy a Canadian juice bar company called Booster Juice. If this had happened, Boost Juice might have been listed on the stock market, but the deal didn't go through.
As of June 2017, there were 270 Boost Juice shops in Australia. There were also 197 shops in other countries, making a total of 467 shops worldwide.
Boost Juice and the Environment
When Boost Juice first started in 2000, they used Styrofoam cups. They chose these cups because they were cheaper and the company thought they were better for the environment. They believed Styrofoam cups used fewer raw materials than paper cups. They also said that Styrofoam cups could be fully recycled. However, many people thought this was a bit misleading, a practice sometimes called greenwashing. This is because most city councils in Australia don't actually recycle soft Styrofoam cups.
In late 2013, Boost Juice changed its cups from Styrofoam to paper. They made this change for a few reasons:
- The Styrofoam cups looked old-fashioned.
- Paper was seen as a more environmentally friendly choice, even though Boost had said the opposite before.
- The new paper cups had a bumpy surface that felt nicer to hold.
Soon after starting, Boost Juice also released an "Enviro-Cup." This was a cup you could use again and again in the shop. If you brought your Enviro-Cup, you would get a $3 discount each time you used it.
In 2017, Boost updated their Enviro-Cup with a new "Fill-Up-Cup." It was the same size and still gave you the discount. The company thought this new cup looked better and was designed to be spill-proof.
Later, in late 2018, Boost introduced even more reusable items. They brought out a new Reusable Stainless Steel Cup, which you could buy for $26. They also offered a Stainless Steel Straw and Straw Cleaner Kit for $9.
