Exploring Bovey's Location
Bovey is a city with a total area of about 2.30 square miles (5.96 km2). Most of this area is land (2.29 square miles (5.93 km2)), with a very small amount of water (0.01 square miles (0.03 km2)).
The Canisteo Mine Pit: A Growing Lake
One interesting challenge for Bovey and its nearby towns, Coleraine and Taconite, is the Canisteo Mine Pit. This used to be a group of 19 mines where people dug for iron ore, but they stopped working in 1985. Since then, the pit has slowly filled with water, turning into a large lake about 4.8 miles long and up to 300 feet deep!
In 2011, the water in this pit reached a level that was higher than some low parts of Bovey. This meant there was a serious risk of the lake overflowing and causing floods in the town. To prevent this, a plan was put in place to drain some of the water from the lake. This project helps keep the city safe from flooding.
