This charming hamlet is located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Calgary. It sits where the Elbow River and Bragg Creek meet, right in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Bragg Creek is known for its beautiful scenery and friendly atmosphere. It's a popular place for people who love the outdoors, artists, and local businesses. Bragg Creek is a great place to visit for a day trip or a vacation. It's popular for its unique shops, tasty restaurants, and amazing mountain views.

The area is very close to the Rocky Mountains and Kananaskis Country. You can find the Elbow River and the beautiful Elbow Falls nearby.

Outdoor Adventures

There are many places to enjoy nature around Bragg Creek. These include Bragg Creek Provincial Park and the Canyon Creek Ice Cave. This cave is also known as the Bragg Creek Ice Cave.

You'll find lots of trails for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and horseback riding. There are also picnic and camping spots. While downhill skiing isn't available anymore, cross-country skiing is still very popular. The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association has created over 140 kilometers (87 miles) of trails for everyone to enjoy.

Summer Camps and Races

Many summer camps are located near Bragg Creek. These include OLQP, Easter Seals Camp Horizon, and Kamp Kiwanis.

Every year, a special race called the powderface42 takes place here. It's a marathon and half-marathon event. This race combines the long distance of a marathon with the exciting challenge of mountain terrain. The route is clearly marked, and there are water stations along the way.

Bragg Creek's History

Bragg Creek is named after Albert Warren Bragg and his 14-year-old brother, John Thomas. They settled in this area in 1894. The community grew between a forest reserve, the Sarcee First Nations reserve, and a Provincial Park.

At first, ranching was the main way people made a living in Bragg Creek. But by the 1920s, more people started visiting for fun and recreation. This helped the local economy grow in new ways.

In the 1990s, the CBC filmed its TV show North of 60 mainly in Bragg Creek. Later, the BBC/Discovery Channel series Dinosapien (2007) and the CBC Television series Wild Roses (2009) also used the town as a filming spot. Parts of the movie FUBAR were filmed here too.

The 2013 Flood

In the spring of 2013, Bragg Creek faced a big challenge. The Elbow River rose more than 2 meters (6.6 feet) and overflowed its banks. This caused damage to many buildings in Bragg Creek and nearby Redwood Meadows.

Even though people were asked to leave for safety, many residents stayed to try and protect their homes. They built temporary dams to fight the rising water. Since then, Bragg Creek has worked hard and recovered from the flood.

Population of Bragg Creek

According to the 2021 Census, Bragg Creek had a population of 432 people. These residents lived in 189 homes. This was a small increase from its population of 418 people in 2016.
