Brandon Montour (born April 11, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays as a defenceman for the Seattle Kraken in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Anaheim Ducks picked Brandon in the second round of the 2014 NHL entry draft. He was the 55th player chosen overall. Brandon Montour won the famous Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024.

Early Life and Hockey Beginnings

Brandon Montour has Mohawk roots. He spent some of his childhood in Ohsweken, Ontario. This village is part of the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. His father is First Nations.

Brandon lived in Tilbury, Ontario for eight years. There, he finished his elementary school. Later, he moved to Ohsweken and went to Assumption College School in Brantford, Ontario.

Besides hockey, Brandon also played a lot of lacrosse. He played minor lacrosse in Windsor. Then he joined the Six Nations Rebels. He even won a major lacrosse championship called the Minto Cup with the Six Nations Arrows.

Playing Career Highlights

Brandon Montour started his ice hockey journey in Cambridge, Ontario. He played minor hockey there. In 2010, he joined the Brantford Eagles. He later played for the Caledonia Corvairs.

He then played for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League (USHL). After that, he played one season for the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He became the highest player from his school to be drafted into the NHL. The Anaheim Ducks picked him in the 2014 NHL draft.

Joining the Anaheim Ducks

Brandon began his professional career at age 21. He played for the Norfolk Admirals. This team was linked to the Anaheim Ducks in a league called the American Hockey League (AHL). He then played a full season with the San Diego Gulls, another Ducks' AHL team.

He was chosen for the AHL All-Star game two years in a row. Even though he didn't play a full season for the Gulls, he scored 21 points in just 25 games.

Brandon was called up to the Anaheim Ducks on December 28, 2016. He played his first NHL game the very next day. This was against the Calgary Flames. He scored his first NHL goal on February 6, 2017. He finished that season with 6 points in 27 games. He also added 7 assists in the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs.

He played the whole 2017–18 season with the Ducks. He set a new personal best with 32 points in 80 games. After this great season, the Ducks signed him to a new two-year contract.

Moving to the Buffalo Sabres

Brandon started the 2018–19 season with the Ducks. He was their top scoring defenceman with 25 points. But the Ducks were not doing well. So, on February 24, 2019, Brandon was traded. He moved to the Buffalo Sabres. The Ducks received another player and a draft pick in return.

Success with the Florida Panthers

On April 10, 2021, Brandon was traded again. This time, he went to the Florida Panthers. The Panthers gave up a draft pick for him.

After signing a new contract with Florida, Brandon had an amazing season in 2022–23. He almost doubled his best score with 16 goals and 73 points. This made him one of the top defencemen in the league. He also scored 5 goals in 7 games during the 2023 playoffs.

In the 2024 playoffs, Brandon helped the Panthers make history. They won their very first Stanley Cup!

Joining the Seattle Kraken

On July 1, 2024, Brandon Montour signed a big contract. He joined the Seattle Kraken as a free agent. On October 29, he scored his first career hat trick. This means he scored three goals in one game! It was a natural hat trick, meaning he scored all three goals in a row. This helped the Kraken win 8–2 against the Montreal Canadiens.

International Play

Brandon Montour also plays for his country. On April 29, 2019, he was chosen to play for Team Canada. This was for the 2019 IIHF World Championship.

During the tournament, he got injured. He had to stop playing after three games. Even though he was injured, Team Canada did very well. They won the silver medal in the championship.

Awards and Honours

Brandon Montour has won several awards during his hockey career:

  • In 2013, he was named the Midwestern Best Defenceman in the GOJHL.
  • In 2014, he was an All-Star in the USHL. He was also named Defenceman of the Year and Player of the Year in the USHL.
  • In 2015, he was on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in college.
  • In the AHL, he was an All-Star in both 2016 and 2017. He was also on the First All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team in 2016.
  • The biggest award he has won is the Stanley Cup in 2024.
