About Brent Kutzle
Early Life and Music Training
Brent Kutzle grew up in Fountain Valley, California. He went to Ethan B. Allen Elementary School. When he was thirteen, he attended Sarah McGarvin School. He also went to La Quinta High School. Later, he studied at California Baptist University and Vanguard University.
Brent started playing piano when he was very young. His mother was a church organist and piano teacher. His father also played piano. Brent's dad encouraged him to learn a second instrument. He suggested the cello because fewer people play it. Brent is a classically trained composer. This means he learned music in a formal, traditional way.
Working on Films
Brent Kutzle has also worked on movies. In 2008, he had a small part in the film The Eye. He played the cello as part of an orchestra in the opening scene. You can also hear his cello on the song "Songs Like Rain." This song was for a 2006 independent film. In 2016, Brent wrote music for the movie Behind the Water.
Joining OneRepublic
Brent joined the band OneRepublic in early 2007. The band's old bassist had left to start a solo career. Brent has played the cello since fourth grade. He said he would only play for a band that let him use his cello.
Brent has changed how the cello sounds in a rock band. He uses special effects like delay and reverb. These effects make the cello sound unique. On OneRepublic's first album, Dreaming Out Loud, he played a main cello part. This part is repeated throughout the song "All Fall Down."
Besides playing cello and bass guitar, Brent also helps write songs. He works with the band's lead singer, Ryan Tedder, and guitarist Zach Filkins. Brent helped write many songs on their second album, Waking Up. These include "All The Right Moves" and "Good Life". He also helped write "Feel Again" and "If I Lose Myself" from their third album, Native. When OneRepublic performs live, Brent plays bass, cello, and sings background vocals.
