Growing Up and Learning Music
Brent Kutzle went to Ethan B. Allen Elementary and Sarah McGarvin School in Westminster, California. He also attended La Quinta High School, California Baptist University, and Vanguard University of Southern California.
Brent started playing piano when he was very young. His mother was a church organist and piano teacher, and his father was also a pianist. His dad even played piano at the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics opening ceremonies! Brent's father encouraged him to learn a second instrument, the cello. He suggested the cello because fewer people play it compared to the violin, which meant less competition. Brent is a classically trained musician, meaning he studied music formally.
Music for Movies
Brent Kutzle has also worked on films. He had a small role in the 2008 movie The Eye, which starred Jessica Alba. In the opening scene, he appears as a cellist in an orchestra. You can also hear his cello playing on the song "Songs Like Rain" from the 2006 independent film of the same name. In 2016, Brent created the soundtrack for the international film Behind the Water.
Brent Kutzle and OneRepublic
Joining the Band
Brent joined OneRepublic in early 2007. This happened after the band's previous bassist left to start his own music career. Brent has played the cello since he was in fourth grade. He has said that he would never play for a band that wouldn't let him use his cello.
Brent has changed how the cello sounds in a rock band. He uses special effects like delay, reverb, and looping. These effects help the cello fit perfectly into the band's rock sound. On OneRepublic's first album, Dreaming Out Loud, Brent's cello is a big part of the song "All Fall Down." The song is built around a cello tune that repeats throughout.
Songwriting and Live Shows
Besides playing the cello and bass guitar, Brent also helps write and create music for OneRepublic. He works closely with the band's lead singer, Ryan Tedder, and guitarist Zach Filkins. Brent co-wrote and co-produced many songs on the band's second album, Waking Up. These include popular singles like "All The Right Moves" and "Good Life." He also helped create "Feel Again" and "If I Lose Myself" from their third album, Native.
When OneRepublic performs live, Brent plays bass guitar and cello. He also sings background vocals with Zach Filkins, drummer Eddie Fisher, and guitarist Drew Brown.
