Brian Herman Thomas Redman (born 9 March 1937) is a British retired racing driver. He is known for being one of the greatest endurance racers in the history of the sport.

Brian Redman raced in many types of car races, including Formula One. He won the SCCA Formula 5000 series three times in a row from 1974 to 1976. He started racing in 1959 and won his first of four Manufacturers Championships in 1968. He also won the South African Springbok series in 1970/71 and the IMSA Camel GTP Championship in 1981.

He has won many famous races, including the Targa Florio in 1970, the Watkins Glen 6 Hours, the 12 Hours of Sebring twice, and the 24 Hours of Daytona twice. He also has two class victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Today, Brian often attends the Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Brian Redman competed in 15 World Championship Grands Prix. His first race was on 1 January 1968. He achieved one podium finish, which means he placed in the top three. This happened at the 1968 Spanish Grand Prix, where he finished third in his Cooper-BRM car.

Later in 1968, he had an accident at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. His car's suspension broke, causing him to crash. He was injured, but he recovered. Throughout his Formula One career, he earned a total of 8 championship points. He achieved two fifth-place finishes in 1972, at the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix and the 1972 German Grand Prix.

Sports Car Success

Brian Redman was very successful in sports-car racing. In 1968, he drove for John Wyer Gulf. In 1969 and 1970, he was a Porsche factory driver. In 1972, he raced with the Ferrari 312 PB. He won the Spa Francorchamps 1000 Ks race five times and the Nurburgring 1000 Ks three times. He also won the Daytona 24 Hours twice and the Sebring race twice.

In 1973, Redman moved to the USA to race full-time. He won the SCCA/USAC Formula 5000 Championship three times in a row, from 1974 to 1976. He drove a Lola T330/332C car for Jim Hall and Carl Haas. He competed against many famous drivers like Mario Andretti and Al Unser.

At the end of 1976, the SCCA racing series changed its rules. The new series was called Can-Am. During practice for the first race of the new season, Brian had a serious accident. His car crashed, and he was badly hurt. He suffered a broken neck and other injuries. It took him nine months to recover.

Amazing Comeback

Brian made an incredible return to racing in 1978. He won the 12 Hours of Sebring race while driving a Porsche 935. He continued racing for Dick Barbour Racing through 1979 and 1980. In 1981, he drove the new Lola T600 IMSA GTP car. He won the first race at Laguna Seca and then went on to win the IMSA Camel GTP championship.

His last year of professional racing was in 1989, when he was 52 years old. He drove for the Aston Martin team in the 1989 World Sports Prototype Championship. After retiring from driving, he helped manage the Redman Bright racing team.

Brian Redman still enjoys racing today. He lives in Florida and takes part in historic racing events.

Legacy

  • Road America hosts "The WeatherTech International Challenge with Brian Redman." This is one of the biggest and most important vintage car racing events in the US.
  • Brian Redman has been honored in several Halls of Fame, including:
