What is the History of Brimfield Township?
Brimfield Township got its name from the town of Brimfield, Massachusetts. It's the only township named Brimfield in all of Ohio!
The land for the township was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Two men, Israel Thorndike and John Wyles, Jr., owned this land. They came to the area in 1816 to check out their property and divide it. Even though they didn't live in Brimfield, Thorndike sent his nephew, Henry Thorndike, to help settle the area.
In its early years, Brimfield was known by several different names. These names often referred to the swampy land there. It was called "Swamptown," then "Beartown," "Greenbriar," and "Wylestown."
In 1818, when the township government was set up, leaders decided to name it "Thorndike." This was because Henry Thorndike had promised to donate land for a town square. However, he never followed through. So, the people living there asked to change the name to "Brimfield." They chose this name to honor John Wyles, Jr., who had inherited his father's land and lived in Brimfield, Massachusetts, at the time.
A post office opened in Brimfield in 1834 and stayed open until 1907.
