Hyperolius dorsalis Peters, 1875

The brown banana frog (Afrixalus dorsalis) is a cool little amphibian. It's also known as the striped spiny reed frog. This frog belongs to a group of amphibians called anurans, which includes all frogs and toads. It is part of the Hyperoliidae family.

What Does the Brown Banana Frog Look Like?

These frogs are usually light to dark brown. They have pretty silver-white patterns on their skin. These patterns can be different for each frog. Some might have a triangle shape on the tip of their nose. Others might have a long stripe going down their side. You might also see a light spot on their lower back. Sometimes, they even have two light spots on their lower legs.

Where Do These Frogs Live?

The brown banana frog lives in many countries in Africa. You can find them in places like Angola, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo. They also live in Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, and Nigeria. They might even be found in Togo.

These frogs like many different kinds of homes. Their favorite places are warm, wet forests. They also enjoy moist shrublands and wet grasslands. You can find them near freshwater marshes and ponds. They even live in rural gardens and along canals and ditches. Sometimes, they live in areas where forests used to be but are now open land.

How Are We Protecting Them?

Many frogs and other amphibians in this area face challenges. Their homes are sometimes lost due to human activities. Also, the number of people living in these areas is growing. This can put more pressure on the frogs' natural spaces.

Even with these challenges, the brown banana frog is doing okay. It seems to do well in open grasslands and areas where forests have been cleared. This means it might be able to adapt to some changes in its environment.

Scientists have found a fungus called Batrachochytrium in some of these frogs. This fungus causes a disease called chytridiomycosis. This disease has caused problems for amphibians in other parts of the world. Researchers are studying how it affects the brown banana frog in places like Okomu National Park in Nigeria.

How Long Do They Live?

We don't know exactly how long the brown banana frog lives. Scientists are still studying this!
