Burton-in-Kendal is a village and a type of local area called a civil parish. It's located in the very south of Cumbria, England. About 660 houses are in the parish. In 2001, 1,411 people lived there. By 2011, the population grew to 1,497.

Historically, it was part of Westmorland county. The village is on the A6070 road, halfway between Lancaster and Kendal. It sits near a limestone hill called Farleton Knott.

History of Burton-in-Kendal

The old village church is named St James. In the 1700s, Burton was an important place for selling corn. The famous composer Felix Borowski was born here in March 1872.

The Atkinson family holds the title of Lord of the Manor for Burton. Even though they sold some land, they kept this special title. Burton-in-Kendal was important for travel because of its location. Many inns offered food and rest for travelers and their pack horses.

The village has a rich local history. A book of photos and notes called "Burton-in-Kendal, Clawthorpe and Dalton – Photographic Memories" shares this history. You can find copies at the village shop.

Fun Activities in Burton

Burton-in-Kendal has a multi-use games area (MUGA). There are also tennis courts and a bowling green. Different sports groups in the village use these areas for fun and games.

Community Life

Villagers create a monthly newsletter called the Burton News. It is given free to every home in the parish. In 2002, the Burton News won first place in a contest for monthly magazines. This contest was organized by the Diocese of Carlisle.

Burton is a great place to live for exploring nature. It's close to the beautiful Lake District and the west coast. To the east, you can find the Yorkshire Dales and Howgill Fells.

The local football team is Burton Thistle F.C. They play in the North Lancashire and District Football League. Their games take place in the nearby area of Clawthorpe.

How Burton is Governed

The parish is part of the Burton and Holme electoral ward. This ward includes both villages and the areas around them. In 2011, the total population of this ward was 3,789 people.

The "Burton-in-Kendal" parish was officially created on April 1, 1986. It was formed by joining the older parishes of "Burton" and "Dalton".

Famous People from Burton

Many interesting writers and musicians have lived in Burton-in-Kendal.

  • The novelist and poet Anne Spillard lives in the village. She won an award for her novel The Cartomancer in 1987.
  • The writer and poet David Craig also lives here. He taught creative writing at the University of Lancaster. He has written novels, travel books, and poetry.
  • The novelist Joe Stretch grew up in the village during the 1990s.
  • Guitarist and musician Mo Witham lives in Burton with his wife Kelly, who is a singer. Mo has played guitar in many rock and pop bands since the 1960s.
