Butler family (Artemis Fowl) facts for kids

The Butler family is a special family of martial arts experts in the exciting Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer. The most important members are Domovoi Butler (everyone just calls him "Butler") and his younger sister Juliet. There's also their uncle, known as "the Major", and an ancestor named Virgil Butler. This family has a very important job: they are bodyguards!

Serving the Fowl Family

The Butler family has been serving the Fowl family for hundreds of years. They work as personal bodyguards. The very first Butler bodyguard was Virgil Butler. He worked for Lord Hugo de Fóle during an old war called the Norman Crusades. Some people even think this is where the word "butler" came from!

Once a Butler is assigned to a Fowl, they stay with them for life. It's a tough and sometimes lonely job, but it pays very well. Butlers never tell their first name to the Fowl they protect. This is to keep their relationship professional, not too personal. For example, Butler only told Artemis Fowl his first name when he thought he was going to die. Luckily, Butler was saved by magic, so he's the only living Butler whose first name a Fowl knows!

Bodyguard Training

Children in the Butler family start their special training when they are just ten years old. They go to secret training centers, like one in Japan, called Madame Ko's Bodyguard Academy. Here, they learn all sorts of amazing skills:

• How to cook fancy meals (like a professional chef!)
• How to shoot accurately
• A mix of different martial arts styles
• Emergency medicine (first aid)
• And even how to use computers and tech

If there isn't a Fowl family member for them to guard after their training, these highly skilled Butlers often become bodyguards for important royal families in places like Monaco or Saudi Arabia.

Domovoi Butler

Domovoi Butler, usually called "Butler", is a huge and incredibly strong man. He is part Russian and part Japanese. He's known around the world as one of the toughest and most skilled martial artists. He's even the only human to have beaten a troll in a fight! Butler is very tall, about 6 feet 10 inches (210 cm). He likes to wear a simple black suit and keeps his hair very short or shaved.

Butler is the personal bodyguard for the young genius, Artemis Fowl II. He has been protecting Artemis since the day Artemis was born. Butler trained at Madame Ko's academy and has worked for different spy agencies and governments. He is super dedicated to Artemis and his plans. His strength and his many contacts around the world are very helpful to Artemis. Even though magic becomes more common in their adventures, Butler is still one of Artemis's most important allies and his closest friend.

Butler is amazing with his bare hands, but he's also an expert with all kinds of weapons. He often carries a pistol, small throwing knives, and other tools. He has also used older weapons like a medieval mace and even special fairy weapons.

Juliet Butler is Butler's younger sister. She is the only person who can make Butler laugh! Butler loves his sister very much. He remembers teaching her cool spinning kicks in her sandbox when she was a baby. Juliet is four years older than Artemis, so she was 16 when Artemis first started his adventures. She has pretty blond hair and big blue eyes. She even won a local beauty contest once! Juliet loves wrestling, probably because of her martial arts training.

Juliet plays a big role in one of the books, The Eternity Code. This is when Butler gets hurt and can't do his bodyguard job. Juliet comes back from her training to help Artemis. She was trying to break Butler's record for graduating from Madame Ko's Academy, but she was a bit too playful to finish on time. Still, she is incredibly strong and skilled. After this adventure, Juliet decides to become a professional wrestler. She uses the ring name "Jade Princess" and even uses a jade hairpiece to smack her opponents!

Juliet wasn't in Artemis Fowl and the Opal Deception because she was busy wrestling in Mexico. But she returns in The Atlantis Complex. In this book, Butler travels to Mexico because he thinks Juliet is in danger. It turns out to be a trick, but then a bad guy uses magic to make the wrestling fans try to hurt them! This magic also makes Juliet remember everything about fairies.

The Major

Butler's uncle is known simply as "the Major". He was the bodyguard for Artemis Fowl I, Artemis's father. The Major also trained and graduated from Madame Ko's Bodyguard Academy. Sadly, he died in an explosion of a ship called the Fowl Star.

Virgil Butler

Virgil Butler was the very first Butler to serve the Fowl family. He was a manservant to Lord Hugo de Folé many centuries ago.
