History of Cadempino

Cadempino was first written about in the year 1004. Back then, it was called Cadampinus. The land originally belonged to a family called Totoniden from Campione d'Italia.

Later, in 844, their lands, including Cadempino, were given to the S. Ambrogio monastery in Milan. By 1004, other important places like Como Cathedral and the Abbey of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia also owned parts of the village.

The Church of SS Gervasio e Protasio was first mentioned in the 1300s. It was part of the Lamone parish in 1468. In 1910, it became its own special church area called a Vicariate.

Cadempino and a nearby town, Lamone, used to share rights to graze animals in the mountain meadows. But in 1507, Cadempino's rights were given to another town, Isone. This, along with disagreements about their shared border, caused a long-lasting fight between Cadempino and Lamone. They kept arguing about their border until 1887.

For a long time, Cadempino was mostly a farming community. People also earned a little money from moving animals to different pastures during the year and from sand pits. However, in the 1900s, things changed a lot. Many factories and businesses moved into the town, especially near the main highway.

The number of people living in Cadempino has grown a lot since World War II. It has tripled! Today, almost one-third of the people living there are not Swiss citizens. In 2001, most workers (about 948 people in 36 companies) worked in factories. The service industry had 75 companies but fewer workers (531 people).
