Cairns North is a coastal suburb located in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. It's a part of the Cairns Region. In 2021, about 5,334 people lived here. This suburb is just north of the main city area of Cairns.

Exploring Cairns North's Location
Cairns North is bordered by the Cairns Airport to the north. To the east, you'll find the beautiful Trinity Bay. A small creek called Lily Creek forms part of its western edge. As its name suggests, it's right next to the central part of Cairns.
Sheridan Street is a major road that runs through Cairns North. It's part of Highway 1, which is a big road that goes around the Australian coast. The Tablelands railway line also passes through. There's a train station called Edgehill, sometimes known as Cairns North railway station, within the suburb.
The land in Cairns North is very flat and close to sea level. Near the ocean, there are parks and an esplanade. This area separates the buildings from the sea. At high tide, there's a small sandy beach. But when the tide is low, you can see a large mudflat. The suburb has a mix of homes for people living there all the time and places for tourists. There are also shops and community buildings.
A Look Back at Cairns North's History
Cairns North is on the traditional land of the Yidinji Aboriginal people.
A school called Edge Hill State School first opened here in 1917. It was later renamed Cairns North State School in 1939. This school closed down in 2004.
Cairns State High School started in 1924. It had actually begun a few years earlier in 1917, as a part of another school.
Mother of Good Counsel School, a Catholic primary school, opened its doors in 1936 with only 19 students. It was started by a priest who saw the need for Catholic education. The Sisters of Mercy helped run the school.
The local Catholic church parish for North Cairns was created in 1952.
Even though Cairns North has a beach, people were worried about marine stingers (like jellyfish) in the ocean. So, in 1962, the Tobruk Memorial swimming pool was built. This gave people a safe place to swim.

Most people (56.6%) spoke only English at home. Other languages spoken included Punjabi, Japanese, and Mandarin. When asked about religion, the most common answer was "No Religion" (32.5%).
