Callum Wright's Football Career
Starting His Journey in Football
Callum Wright began playing football at Tranmere Rovers. Scouts noticed him while he was playing for his brother's team. After Tranmere, he moved to Everton.
When he was 13, Everton released him. But he soon found a new club. In 2015, he joined Blackburn Rovers after a trial. He signed a two-year scholarship with them in 2016. In his first season, he played 24 games for the under-18 team and scored 3 goals. Because of his good performance, he moved up to the under-23 squad in 2017. Many Premier League teams, including his old club Everton, showed interest in him.
Time at Leicester City
Callum decided to join Leicester City. He signed a three-and-a-half-year contract in February 2018. His first game for Leicester's under-23 team was on 2 February 2018. It was a 1–0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League 2. While at Leicester, he was chosen to play for the England U18 squad. They played in the 2018 Panda Cup in China.
First Loan to Cheltenham Town (2020–21)
In February 2021, Callum joined EFL League Two team Cheltenham Town on loan. He stayed there for the rest of the season. His first game for Cheltenham Town was on 16 February 2021. He started in a league match against Walsall. Cheltenham won the game 2–1, and Callum scored the winning goal.
His manager, Michael Duff, praised him for being strong on the field. On the last day of the season, 8 May, Callum scored in a 4–1 win against Harrogate Town. This win helped Cheltenham secure the League Two title. He played 17 games and scored 4 goals for Cheltenham that season. One of his goals, a volley against his old club Tranmere Rovers on 2 April 2021, won Cheltenham's Goal of the Season award.
Second Loan to Cheltenham Town (2021–22)
In August 2021, Callum returned to Cheltenham Town for another loan spell. This time, Cheltenham was playing in League One. His contract with Leicester was going to end in summer 2021. But he extended it for one year when he rejoined Cheltenham.
His first game of this season was on 10 August. It was a 2–0 win against Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup. His first league game was on 14 August, a 3–1 loss to Wycombe Wanderers. He scored his first goal on 17 August against Ipswich Town. It was the equalising goal in a game they won 2–1. After this match, his manager Michael Duff compared his playing style to Frank Lampard.
Callum had a great August, scoring one goal and making 3 assists in 6 games. He won Cheltenham's Player of the Month award. He also won August's Goal of the Month for a goal he scored on 27 August against Burton Albion.
However, in September, Callum got an injury to his lateral ligament. It was thought he might be out for 6 months. But he returned two months later, on 23 November. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Gillingham. His goal on 8 January against Burton, a "stunning volley," won January's Goal of the Month. He played all 5 games in January, scoring 2 goals. He won Player of the Month again, just like in August. Callum finished the season with 37 appearances and 9 goals in all competitions.
Moving to Blackpool
After his loan at Cheltenham, Callum's contract with Leicester was set to end in summer 2022. Many EFL teams wanted to sign him. Callum extended his contract with Leicester for one more year until 2023. He said he was excited for the "next challenge."
He played well in pre-season games. But on 1 September 2022, he joined Blackpool for an unknown fee. He signed a three-year contract, with an option for an extra year. Blackpool's manager, Michael Appleton, had worked with Callum before at Leicester. Callum made his debut on 14 September in a 3–0 loss to Rotherham United. He also got injured in that game, dislocating a joint in his leg.
He made his first start after his injury against Norwich City on 1 October. Blackpool lost that game 1–0. By January 2023, Callum had only played 10 games, starting in 5 of them.
Time at Plymouth Argyle
2022–23 Season at Plymouth
In January 2023, Callum signed with League One leaders Plymouth Argyle. He signed a three-and-a-half-year contract until 2026. He said joining Plymouth was an easy decision. He told his agent and family that he just wanted to "get it done."
He made his full debut on 7 January in a 0–0 draw against Bolton Wanderers. Callum scored his first goal for Plymouth in his first home game. This was against his former club Cheltenham, in a 4–2 victory on 21 January. He finished the season with 20 league games for Plymouth, 23 in all competitions, and 4 goals.
2023–24 Season at Plymouth
Callum started Plymouth's Championship season opener on 5 August 2023. It was a 3–1 win against Huddersfield Town. On 19 September 2023, he injured his knee ligament in a 4–1 loss to Bristol City. It was reported he might miss up to 7 weeks, but he did not need surgery.
He returned to play on 4 November in a 3–3 draw against Middlesbrough. His first start after injury was on 9 December. It was a 4–0 loss to his former club Leicester. After manager Steven Schumacher left in December, Ian Foster took over. Under Foster, Callum played less. He only played 1 league game before Foster was sacked. Callum finished the season with 8 starts in 21 league games, but he did not score any goals.
2024–25 Season at Plymouth
Wayne Rooney became Plymouth's manager in May. His first competitive game was on 11 August 2024, against Sheffield Wednesday. Callum came on as a substitute in that game, which Plymouth lost 4–0. On 26 December 2024, Callum received a red card for a "stupid tackle" in a 4–0 loss to Coventry City. This meant he was suspended for 3 matches.
Under the new manager, Miron Muslić, Callum started playing more. In the fourth round of the FA Cup, Plymouth played against Liverpool. This is the club Callum supports. Callum started the match, and Plymouth won 1–0. Plymouth's owner, Simon Hallett, praised Callum for playing "like a man possessed." Callum swapped shirts with Liverpool player Luis Díaz after the game.
Loan to Wigan Athletic
On 4 July 2025, Callum Wright joined League One team Wigan Athletic. He is on a season-long loan deal with them.
