What Does "Dry" Mean in Canada Dry?
The word "Dry" in Canada Dry means "not sweet." It's like how people describe a dry wine. When John J. McLaughlin first made "Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale," it was much less sweet. Other ginger ales at the time were very sugary. Because of this, he called his new drink "dry."
The History of Canada Dry
In 1890, a Canadian pharmacist and chemist named John J. McLaughlin opened a carbonated water plant in Toronto. He had learned about making soda in New York. In 1904, McLaughlin created his special "Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale."
Just three years later, the drink became very popular. It was even served in the home of the Governor General of Canada. The original label had a beaver on a map of Canada. This was later changed to the crown and shield label you see today.
When McLaughlin started sending his ginger ale to New York, it became a big hit. So, he opened a factory there. After McLaughlin passed away in 1914, his brother, Samuel McLaughlin, ran the company for a short time. In 1923, a group called P. D. Saylor and Associates bought the business. They formed Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc.
Canada Dry became very popular as a mixer during Prohibition. This was a time when alcohol was illegal in the U.S. People used Canada Dry to help hide the taste of homemade liquor. In the 1930s, Canada Dry began to sell its drinks all over the world. From the 1950s onwards, the company started making many more different products.
Over the years, Canada Dry has been owned by several large companies. These include Dr Pepper, R. J. Reynolds, and Cadbury Schweppes. Today, Keurig Dr Pepper owns Canada Dry.
