History of Canadian, Oklahoma
How Canadian Got Its Name
When Canadian was first established, it was part of Tobucksy County, which was in the Choctaw Nation. This area was known as the Indian Territory back then. The settlement was originally called South Canadian. It got this name from the nearby South Fork of the Canadian River, which is now known as Gaines Creek.
Post Office and Name Change
A post office was set up in South Canadian, Indian Territory, on May 29, 1873. Later, on December 11, 1899, the town's name was officially changed to Canadian.

During the American Civil War, there was an important place nearby called the Canadian Depot. This depot was used to store and distribute supplies for soldiers.
