Canelones is an important city in Uruguay. It is the capital of the Canelones department. The city's name comes from a type of cinnamon plant. This plant, called "canelón," grows by the river with the same name. Since 2010, Canelones has also been the main city for its own local government, called the municipality.

Where is Canelones?
Canelones is located in Uruguay. It is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Montevideo. The city sits on Route 5, where it meets Route 64. It is also found on the west side of the Arroyo Canelón Chico river.
A Look Back in Time
Canelones was founded on April 24, 1783. Its first name was "Villa Guadalupe." It became the capital of one of the first nine departments in Uruguay.
The railroad reached Canelones in 1874. Later, in 1908, a major road, National Route 5, opened from Montevideo. On March 23, 1916, the city's name changed to "Canelones." It was also officially made a "Ciudad" (city) by law.

According to the 2011 census, Canelones had 19,865 people. In 2010, the local government counted 25,961 people for the whole municipality. Even though Canelones is the capital of its department, it has fewer people than other cities there. These include Ciudad de la Costa and Las Piedras.

What Canelones Makes
The city and the surrounding area have many vineyards. These are places where grapes are grown to make wine. There are also many wineries. In 1987, a large cold-storage facility called "Frigorífico Canelones" was started. This has become the main industry in the city.
