Cardiff is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is located west of Gardendale. In 2010, only 55 people lived there, making it the smallest town in Jefferson County. Cardiff got its name from Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. It is one of four towns in Jefferson County named after places in Great Britain. The others are Birmingham, Leeds, and Brighton.
Where is Cardiff Located?
Cardiff is found at coordinates 33°38′43″N 86°55′59″W. It sits near Five Mile Creek. This creek flows into the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River. The town is just downstream from Brookside.
This area is part of the Cumberland Plateau. It has many deep, narrow valleys carved by streams. The ground here contains a lot of bituminous coal.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cardiff covers about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Cardiff's History
For a long time, Coal mining was the main business in Cardiff. The town was once the smallest in Alabama. However, as underground coal mining decreased and strip mining grew, Cardiff's population also went down.
In May 2003, a big flood damaged many buildings near Five Mile Creek. Today, Cardiff is much smaller. It has only about 20 to 30 people. The town is slowly becoming like a ghost town.
