Carlo Janka (born 15 October 1986) is a Swiss former alpine ski racer. He was born in Obersaxen, Graubünden, Switzerland. He grew up with winter sports right outside his home!

Carlo is a very successful skier. He has won gold medals at both the Winter Olympics and the World Championships. He also won a World Cup overall title. This means he was the best skier across all events in a season.

In 2013, Carlo set a World Cup speed record. This happened during a "super combined" event in Wengen, Switzerland. He reached an amazing speed of 158.77 kilometers per hour (about 98.66 miles per hour)! This was on the Haneggschuss, the fastest part of the famous Lauberhorn ski slope.

Carlo's Ski Racing Journey

Carlo Janka started his first international ski race in December 2001. He was just 15 years old! Four years later, he started winning top spots. He was good at all four main ski disciplines: downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and combined.

He began racing on the Europa Cup circuit in January 2004. Carlo got his first World Cup chances in December 2005. At the Junior World Championships in 2006, he won a bronze medal in giant slalom.

Carlo scored his first World Cup points in December 2006. But his big break came two years later. In November 2008, he surprised everyone by finishing second in a downhill race. This was at Lake Louise, Canada.

Just two weeks later, he won his first World Cup race! It was a giant slalom event in Val d'Isère, France. The next month, he won again in a super-combined race in Wengen. Then, at the 2009 World Championships, he won a gold medal in giant slalom and a bronze in downhill. What an amazing start!

Winning Big in 2009-2010

In December 2009, Carlo did something incredible. He won three World Cup races in one weekend! He won the super-combined, downhill, and giant slalom events. This happened on the tough Birds of Prey course in Beaver Creek, USA.

He was the first skier to win three World Cup races in one weekend in ten years! On January 16, 2010, Carlo won the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen. This is the longest and fastest race on the World Cup tour.

On February 23, 2010, Carlo won the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He won in the giant slalom event. This was held at Whistler Creekside in Canada.

In March 2010, Carlo became the fourth Swiss racer to win the World Cup overall title. He won the downhill and giant slalom races at the World Cup finals. This secured his title as the best overall skier for the season.

In October 2010, Carlo received the Skieur d'Or Award. This award is given to the best skier of the season. He was the first Swiss male skier to win it since 1990!

After the 2011 World Championships, Carlo had some health issues. But he recovered quickly. He won the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, in March 2011. This was his only victory that season.

Carlo changed his ski equipment after the 2013–14 season. He switched from Atomic to Rossignol.
