Caseros is a lively city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It's the main town of the Tres de Febrero Partido, which is part of the big city area called Greater Buenos Aires.

In 1852, a very important event in Argentine history happened here: the Battle of Caseros.

What's in a Name?

The name Caseros comes from a person named Diego Casero. He bought land here in 1781. Over time, local people changed his last name slightly, and that's how the area got its name.

A Look Back in Time

The land where Caseros and El Palomar are today was first given to Captain Juan Ruiz in 1580. This was during the second founding of Buenos Aires Province. People used to call the area "Cañada de Ruiz."

Later, in 1781, Diego Casero bought these lands. In 1788, he built a large building to raise pigeons. This building was in what is now El Palomar. Years later, the local train station took its name from this pigeon house.

These lands became famous for the Battle of Caseros. This battle happened on February 3, 1852. In it, the army led by General Urquiza defeated the forces of Juan Manuel de Rosas.

The Arrival of Trains

In 1888, two important train lines started running through Caseros. These were the Rural Railroad Tramway (now Ferrocarril General Urquiza) and the Buenos Aires of Pacific Railroad (now Ferrocarril General San Martín).

Between Palermo (in Buenos Aires city) and Pilar, Caseros was one of only two stops. The other was Muñiz.

When the train station opened, the first 70 blocks around it were built. This was the start of the town. These first houses would later become the main part of the Tres de Febrero Partido.

The official founding date for Caseros is February 21, 1892.

Early Community Life

In 1896, School No. 12 opened in Caseros. It was first in San Martín. But because more children needed a school, it moved to Caseros.

The Cafferata family is thought to be the first family to settle here in 1861. They leased the land where the 1852 battle took place. They even found old weapons and ammunition while working the land!

Early families in Caseros included Cavassa, Raceeto, Ferro, and others. Luis Cavassa is known as the first grocer. Joaquín Mendoza opened the first store with clothes and small items in 1905. The first shoe store was by Santiago Chiavasco.

In 1908, the first Post Office opened. In 1911, the Registry Office opened. This is where important records like births and marriages are kept.

Sports and Education

Caseros has a rich sports history. It once had two football stadiums. One belongs to the Club Atlético Estudiantes, a team that plays in a high league called Primera B Nacional. Their stadium can hold 17,000 people.

Another team, Justo José de Urquiza, used to play in Caseros. They moved to Loma Hermosa in 1993.

In 1995, the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTreF) was created. It's located across from the Caseros Station. Today, about 13,000 students attend this university. They can choose from many different degrees.
