Modernizing Castletown
Castletown has seen many changes over the years. There has been a big project to make the area more modern. This project focused on updating the old houses where miners used to live. It also improved the area around the Aviary Estate.
New Homes and Developments
Since 2011, more new buildings have appeared in the eastern part of Castletown. The entire Aviary area was taken down. New houses now stand on both sides of the main street. The Gentoo Group helped to build these new homes.
At the other end of Castletown, you will find a newer neighborhood. This area is called Fulford Grange.
Castletown's History
Even though Castletown is very close to Sunderland today, it was once quite separate. Until 1967, this mining village was managed by Durham County Council. It was part of the Sunderland Rural District Council.
Connecting to Sunderland
Castletown used to be a fairly isolated community. But in the 1950s and 1960s, many council houses were built. These new housing estates included Red House, Hylton Castle, and Town End Farm. These new areas effectively connected Castletown to the rest of Sunderland's northern suburbs.
Northern Spire Bridge
A major new bridge now connects Castletown to another area called Pallion. This bridge is known as the Northern Spire Bridge. It officially opened in August 2018. The bridge helps people travel more easily between these parts of Sunderland.
