Catskill is a small village in New York, United States. It is also the main town, or county seat, of Greene County. In 2020, about 3,745 people lived here. The village is located in the northeastern part of the larger town of Catskill.

History of Catskill Village
Early Days and Founding
The land where Catskill village now stands was bought from the native people in 1684. After the American Revolution ended, there were only about ten houses in the community.
Catskill officially became a village in 1806. It's special because it's one of only a few villages in New York that still uses its original founding rules, called a "charter." Most other villages have updated their rules over time.
Famous People from Catskill's Past
Some important people have connections to Catskill. Martin van Buren, who later became a U.S. President, was married in the village. Also, John Adams, a congressman from New York, passed away here.

Where is Catskill Located?
Catskill is in the eastern part of Greene County, New York. You can find it where the Catskill Creek flows into the big Hudson River. This location is in the northeastern part of the wider town of Catskill.
Roads and Travel
Several important roads pass through or near Catskill. New York State Route 385 goes right through the middle of the village. It connects Catskill to nearby towns like Athens, about 4 miles away, and Coxsackie, about 10 miles away.
U.S. Route 9W runs through the western part of the village. It can take you north to Ravena (about 17 miles) or south to Saugerties (about 11 miles).
New York State Route 23 crosses the northern edge of Catskill. This route goes over the Hudson River on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. If you head west on Route 23, you'll reach Interstate 87, also known as the New York State Thruway, at Exit 21.

The village of Catskill covers a total area of about 7.4 square kilometers (2.86 square miles). Most of this area is land (about 5.9 square kilometers or 2.28 square miles). The rest, about 1.5 square kilometers (0.58 square miles), is water, including parts of the Hudson River and Catskill Creek.
