Cayetano "Dondon" Paderanga Jr. (October 9, 1948 – January 29, 2016) was a well-known Filipino economist. He served as the Director-General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). NEDA is a special part of the Philippine government. Its job is to plan how the country's economy will grow and develop.
Mr. Paderanga was the NEDA Director-General twice. His first time was from 1990 to 1992, during President Corazon C. Aquino's time. He also worked at the Central Bank of the Philippines from 1993 to 1999. Later, he was an Executive Director for the Philippines at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from 2001 to 2003.
He was born in Camiguin province. He studied at the Center for Research and Communication (now the University of Asia & the Pacific) and De La Salle University. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in California. Mr. Paderanga also taught economics at the University of the Philippines School of Economics.

Early Life and Education
Cayetano Paderanga Jr. was born on October 9, 1948. His parents were Atty. Cayetano Palarca Paderanga and Judge Consejo Woo Paderanga. He grew up in Camiguin and was one of 16 children.
He went to high school at Fatima College in Camiguin. In March 1968, he started studying Accounting at De La Salle University in Manila.
Career Highlights
Academic Contributions
After finishing his accounting degree, Mr. Paderanga worked at De La Salle College. This was from June 1969 to May 1971. He then became a research tutor at the Center for Research and Communication. He was also a Fulbright-Hays Fellow in 1972. This fellowship helps people study abroad.
Mr. Paderanga went to Stanford University for his Ph.D. in Economics. He was a university fellow there from 1974 to 1976. He also taught at Foothill College in Mountain View, California. In 1979, he finished his Ph.D. with a paper on housing prices.
After getting his Ph.D., he joined the UP School of Economics. He started as an assistant professor. He also spent time as a visiting fellow at Yale University in the USA. In 1991, he became a full professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He was also a visiting professor at Kobe University in Japan in 2010.
Serving the Government
In 2010, after President Benigno Aquino III won the elections, Mr. Paderanga was chosen for an important role. He became the Socio-Economic Planning Secretary. This meant he was in charge of NEDA again, just like under President Corazon C. Aquino.
In July 2010, he predicted that the Philippine economy would grow by 8%. This was a higher prediction than what the government first thought. It showed his confidence in the country's economic future.
He officially resigned from NEDA in 2012 due to health reasons. President Aquino then appointed him Chairman of the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP). This was a less stressful job, but it still allowed him to serve the government. He stayed in this role until he passed away.
Mr. Paderanga also served as a member of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of the Philippines. He was also an Executive Director for the Philippines and other countries at the Asian Development Bank from 2001 to 2003.
Passing Away
Cayetano Paderanga Jr. passed away on January 29, 2016. He died from problems after heart surgery. He was at St. Luke's Medical Center Global City and was with his family.
