The Story of Celine
How Celine Began
In 1945, Céline Vipiana and her husband, Richard, started their business. It was one of the first luxury brands of its kind. They began by making custom-made shoes for children and opened their first shop in Paris. Their brand was known for its special logo, a red elephant designed by Raymont Peynet.
Changing Focus
In 1960, Celine decided to change what it focused on. The company started making ready-to-wear clothes for women, with a sporty style. They also began offering leather items like bags, shoes called loafers, gloves, and other clothing. Céline Vipiana herself designed for the brand from 1945 until she retired in 1988.
In 1964, Celine launched a new perfume called "Vent fou" and a collection of accessories called "American Sulky." Both were very popular. The trench coat became one of the brand's most important products. Because leather goods were so popular, Celine opened a special leather shop in Florence, Italy.
In 1973, Celine updated its logo. The new logo featured two "C" letters linked together, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe monument in Paris. Around this time, Celine started opening stores in other parts of the world, like Monte Carlo, Geneva, Hong Kong, and Beverly Hills. The founders also wanted to help others, so Richard Vipiana created the Céline-Pasteur Prize to support the American Hospital of Paris.
Joining LVMH
In 1987, a businessman named Bernard Arnault bought part of Celine. Then, in 1996, the entire brand became part of a large luxury group called LVMH. This helped Celine become even more famous. LVMH opened a big new Celine store in Paris.
