Chandos Lake is a beautiful lake located in North Kawartha, Ontario, Canada. It's a popular spot for cottagers and visitors, known for its clear waters and many bays. This lake is a great place to enjoy nature and water activities.

Exploring Chandos Lake's Shape and Size

Chandos Lake has a unique shape, like a backwards "L". It features three main sections, often called bays:

  • West Bay: This bay connects to the main part of the lake through a narrow passage.
  • South Bay: This section stretches southwest and is separated by a curving piece of land.
  • Gilmour Bay: A smaller bay with two distinct lobes, found at the southern tip of the lake. It connects to the main lake through Gilmour Bay Narrows.

How Big is Chandos Lake?

Chandos Lake is quite large! It covers an area of about 1,387 hectares (that's like 3,427 football fields!). It's also very deep, reaching a maximum depth of 48 metres (which is taller than a 15-story building!).

Where Does Chandos Lake's Water Come From?

Chandos Lake is part of the Atlantic watershed. This means its water eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The lake is fed by natural springs, which keep its waters fresh.
  • Water flows out from the north end of Chandos Lake into Flat Creek.
  • Flat Creek then leads to Paudash Lake.
  • From Paudash Lake, the water continues into the Crowe River.
  • The Crowe River eventually joins the Trent River.
  • Finally, the Trent River empties into Lake Ontario.

Chandos Lake is actually the largest lake in the entire Crowe River watershed system.

History and Community Around the Lake

Long ago, the Mississauga Anishinabe people lived on this land. They called the lake Mongosogan. This name is part of their traditional territory and history.

Chandos Lake Today

Even though Chandos Lake isn't officially one of the famous Kawartha Lakes, it's still a big part of the "Kawartha cottage country." Many families have cottages here, with about 1,200 cottages lining the lake's shores.

The lake offers several amenities for visitors and residents:

  • There are three marinas where you can dock boats or get supplies.
  • A public beach is available for swimming and relaxing.

Nearby Towns and Roads
