Charles Henry De Groat (born April 3, 1838 – died August 15, 1904) was an important leader in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He became a colonel and was later honored with the special title of brevet brigadier general. This special title meant he was recognized for his bravery and service.

Charles De Groat was born on April 3, 1838, in a place called Cortland, New York. When he was about 14 years old, in 1852, his family moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Later in his life, he worked as the Clerk for Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. This job meant he helped manage important records and paperwork for the county. Charles De Groat passed away on August 15, 1904, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

His Time in the Army

Charles De Groat first joined the Army in 1861, at the start of the American Civil War. The next year, he went back to Fond du Lac. There, he helped create a group of soldiers called the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He became a leader for these soldiers.

In 1864, Charles De Groat was promoted to the rank of Colonel. He then took charge of his regiment during a very important series of battles called the Atlanta Campaign. This was a big part of the war. After that, he also marched with General Sherman's army in what was known as Sherman's March to the Sea. He also fought in the Battle of Bentonville.

Charles De Groat finished his service as a volunteer soldier on May 15, 1865. A few months later, on January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson wanted to give De Groat a special honor. He nominated him to be a brevet brigadier general. This meant he was recognized as if he had held that higher rank, even though he was a colonel. The United States Senate agreed to this honor on March 12, 1866.
