The Charleston Chew is a super fun candy bar! It has a soft, chewy center called nougat, which tastes like marshmallow. This chewy part is covered in a yummy chocolate coating. It was first created in 1922 by the Fox-Cross Candy Company. This company was started by a stage actor named Donley Cross and his friend Charlie Fox. The candy got its name from the "Charleston," a very popular dance back then!

The classic Charleston Chew

The company that made Charleston Chew was bought by Nathan Sloane in 1957. Later, in 1980, it was sold to a big company called Nabisco. Even though Nathan Sloane didn't invent the candy, he did change its original recipe. The first Charleston Chew was a chocolate-covered vanilla nougat.

In the 1970s, new flavors like chocolate and strawberry were added. Later, in 1988, Warner-Lambert bought Charleston Chew from RJR Nabisco. Then, in 1993, Tootsie Roll Industries bought the brand from Warner-Lambert. Tootsie Roll Industries still owns Charleston Chew today!

Discovering Charleston Chew Flavors

You can find Charleston Chew candy bars in a few tasty flavors. The most common ones are vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Long ago, there were even more flavors to try! These included banana, grape, and cherry.

In 1998, a smaller version of the candy bar was introduced. These are called "Mini Charleston Chews." They are bite-sized and have the same shape as the regular candy bar. The very first Charleston Chews came in a simple grey box with the brand name written in small red letters at the bottom.

Charleston Chew in Science Class

Believe it or not, Charleston Chew candy bars have even been used in science! In some North American university geology labs, students use them to learn about rheology. Rheology is the study of how things flow and change shape. Because the candy is chewy and can stretch, it's a great way to show how different materials behave under stress.
