Charles Matthew Hunnam (born 10 April 1980) is an English actor. He is well-known for his role as Jax Teller in the TV show Sons of Anarchy. This show ran from 2008 to 2014 on the FX channel. For his acting, he was nominated twice for a Critics' Choice Television Award.
Charlie Hunnam has also starred in many movies. These include Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), and The Gentlemen (2019). He played Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z (2016). He also took on the role of Arthur Pendragon in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017).
On television, he appeared in the British drama Queer as Folk (1999–2000). He also starred in the series Undeclared (2001–2002) and Shantaram (2022).

Charlie Hunnam was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on 10 April 1980. His mother, Jane Bell, was a ballet dancer and owned a business. His father was William Hunnam. He has an older brother, William, and two younger half-brothers.
When he was 12, his family moved to Melmerby in Cumbria. He went to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Penrith. Later, he decided to study performing arts. He attended the Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle. He earned degrees in film theory and film history. He also studied performing arts. Charlie Hunnam originally planned to write and direct his own movies.
Becoming an Actor
Starting His Acting Journey (1997–2007)
Charlie Hunnam was discovered when he was 17 years old. A production manager saw him in a store on Christmas Eve. He was then cast in his first role in the show Byker Grove. He played a character named Jason for three episodes.
His first big role came at age 18. He played Nathan Maloney in the TV drama Queer as Folk. After this, he moved to the United States. He appeared in the TV series Young Americans. He also starred in the show Undeclared as a British student.
Charlie Hunnam also started acting in movies. He appeared in Abandon (2002) and Nicholas Nickleby (2002). He also had a role in Cold Mountain (2003). He chose his roles carefully, wanting to build a strong career.
He returned to the UK to star in the film Green Street (2005). He played Pete Dunham in this movie. Later, he played Patric in Children of Men (2006).
Rise to Fame with Sons of Anarchy (2008–2012)
From 2008 to 2014, Charlie Hunnam starred in Sons of Anarchy. He played Jackson "Jax" Teller, the leader of a motorcycle club. The show's creator, Kurt Sutter, cast him after seeing him in Green Street Hooligans.
His performance as Jax Teller earned him several nominations. These included a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination. He was also nominated for two EWwy Awards for Best Lead Actor.
In 2011, Charlie Hunnam appeared in the movie The Ledge. In 2012, he starred in the comedy 3,2,1... Frankie Go Boom. He also played Jay, an ex-boxer, in the crime drama Deadfall (2012).
Big Screen Success (2013–2019)
Charlie Hunnam starred as Raleigh Becket in the sci-fi movie Pacific Rim. This film was released in July 2013 and earned a lot of money worldwide. In 2014, he won a Huading Award for Best Global Emerging Actor for this role.
He worked again with director Guillermo del Toro in the horror film Crimson Peak. This movie was released in 2015. Charlie Hunnam also played the geographer Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z (2016). This adventure drama premiered in October 2016.
In May 2017, he starred as King Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He also appeared in Guy Ritchie's 2019 film The Gentlemen.
Recent Projects (2020–present)
In 2022, Charlie Hunnam played Charlie Waldo in the mystery film Last Looks. His first show for Apple TV+ was Shantaram. It premiered in October 2022. He plays Dale Conti, also known as Lin Ford, in this series. The show is based on a famous book.
In 2023, it was announced that Charlie Hunnam joined Zack Snyder's Netflix movie Rebel Moon. This movie is an epic space opera. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire was released in December 2023. The second part, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, came out in April 2024.
In May 2024, Charlie Hunnam was cast in a new show for Amazon Prime Video. It's an adaptation of the comic series Criminal. He will play Leo, a very smart master thief.
Personal Life
Charlie Hunnam married actress Katharine Towne in 1999. They divorced in 2002. Since 2005, he has been in a relationship with artist Morgana McNelis.
In 2016, he started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He earned his blue belt in October 2018.
