Charters Towers City is the main part of the town of Charters Towers in Queensland, Australia. It's like the downtown area where many shops and businesses are. It used to be called Lissner. In 2021, about 2,219 people lived here.

A Look Back in Time

Charters Towers City has a rich history, especially with its churches and schools.

Churches and Faith

The Central Methodist Church first opened its doors in 1879. A new building replaced it in 1890. Later, in 1966, the current unique octagonal church was built. In 1977, when the Methodist Church joined with others to form the Uniting Church of Australia, it became the Charters Towers Uniting Church. A Baptist Church also opened here in 1889.

School Days

Charters Towers State School started way back on October 13, 1875. Over the years, it changed quite a bit! In 1882, it split into separate schools for boys and girls. The girls' school even split again to have a separate infants' school. But don't worry, they all came back together. In 1965, the Boys School and the Girls & Infants School combined to form the Charters Towers Central State School we know today.

St Mary's College was a Catholic school opened by the Sisters of Mercy in 1882. It later joined with other schools to become Columba Catholic College in 1998. Charters Towers State High School opened on January 22, 1912, and is still a big part of the community.

Changing Names

For a long time, this central area was known as Lissner. But in 2012, people thought it would be better to call it Charters Towers City. This way, everyone would know it's the main part of Charters Towers. Some parts of nearby areas like Queenton, Grand Secret, and Richmond Hill were also included in the new Charters Towers City.
