Schools and Colleges Through Time

Richmond Hill has a long history of education with many schools opening over the years.

Early Catholic Schools

  • In 1876, St Columba's Primary School for girls opened. It was started by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic group.
  • The Sisters also opened St Mary's College in 1882.
  • Later, another Catholic group, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, took over these schools.
  • On April 14, 1902, the Christian Brothers, also a Catholic group, opened Mount Carmel College for boys.
  • In 1998, these three schools joined together to form Columba Catholic College. It still uses the different campuses, including the Mount Carmel campus in Richmond Hill. Today, the school is managed by Catholic Education under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Townsville.

Richmond Hill State School

  • Richmond Hill State School, a public school, first opened its doors on September 9, 1895.

Presbyterian and Methodist Schools

  • The Presbyterian and Methodist Churches opened Thornburgh College on June 1, 1919. It was a boarding school for boys.
  • In 1978, Thornburgh College joined with Blackheath College. Blackheath was a girls' school in Charters Towers.
  • Together, they became Blackheath and Thornburgh College. This new school is for both boys and girls and is located at the original Thornburgh College site in Richmond Hill.

Anglican Schools

  • In 1920, All Souls’ School for boys was started. It was set up by the Bush Brotherhood of St Barnabas, part of the Anglican Church. It was a special school to remember those who died in World War I.
  • In 1921, St Gabriel’s School for girls was opened by the Sisters of the Sacred Advent, another Anglican group.
  • After many years, these two schools merged in 1990 to become All Souls St Gabriels School. It is located on the old All Souls campus.
  • In 2000, the school became an independent Anglican school, meaning it is no longer directly run by the church.
