Chile women's national football team in 2021

The Chile women's national football team plays for Chile in international women's football games. The team is managed by the Federación de Fútbol de Chile. They are part of CONMEBOL, which is the football group for South America.

Chile almost made it to the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991, 1995, and 2011. They finally played in the World Cup for the first time in 2019. Chile is one of only two teams, along with Brazil, that has always qualified for the Copa América Femenina. They often play friendly matches against their traditional rival, Argentina. The team's captain is currently Yanara Aedo.

In many South American countries, women's football is not as popular as men's football. However, when Chile qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France, they became the fifth country in CONMEBOL to have both men's and women's teams reach a senior FIFA tournament. Chile is also one of only three Spanish-speaking countries to have won a game in the Women's World Cup. The Chile women's national football team also played in their first Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Team History

Chile was one of the first teams to play in the Copa América Femenina. This was in the very first tournament in 1991. They played against Brazil and Venezuela. Chile lost 1–6 to Brazil but won 1–0 against Venezuela. This meant they did not qualify for the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup.

After this, Chile's team had a tough time for a while. They only managed to get third place in 1995 and 2010.

A Comeback for La Roja

After not qualifying for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, the team didn't play for three years. But in May 2017, they returned with a friendly match against Peru. Chile won this game by a huge score of 12–0. This win helped bring the team back to life.

Chile then hosted the 2018 Copa América Femenina. They played very well and finished in second place. Many fans came to watch their games, filling the stadiums. This second-place finish earned Chile a spot in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. It was the first time the women's team had ever qualified for this big tournament. Fans were very happy, especially after the men's team did not qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

World Cup and Olympic Games

In the 2019 Women's World Cup, Chile was in a very tough group. They played against strong teams like the world champions United States and Sweden. They also played against Thailand. Chile played bravely but lost 0–2 to Sweden and 0–3 to the United States. They also didn't score any goals in these matches.

However, in their last game against Thailand, Chile made history. They won 2–0! But a missed penalty kick by Francisca Lara meant Chile was out of the World Cup. They had a worse goal difference than Nigeria, who moved on.

Chile later qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. They beat Cameroon in a special playoff game. At the Olympics, they faced tough teams like Great Britain, Canada, and hosts Japan. Chile did not win any games, but they fought hard. Their losses were not as big as some people expected.
