The name Chinavita comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people long ago. One meaning for Chinavita is "illuminated hilltop." Another idea is that it means "our hill."
Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Chinavita is now was home to the Muisca people. The Muisca were an important group of indigenous people in Colombia. This specific area was controlled by the zaque (a Muisca ruler) from Hunza.
Modern Chinavita was officially founded on September 12, 1822. Before this, it was just a small village or vereda that belonged to the nearby town of Garagoa.
The main ways people earn money in Chinavita are through agriculture (farming) and livestock farming (raising animals). Farmers in Chinavita grow many different crops. These include potatoes, sugarcane, tomatoes, bananas, and coffee. They also grow a plant called fique, which is used to make natural fibers for ropes and bags.
