Choa Chu Kang MRT/LRT Station (NS4/JS1/BP1) is a busy MRT station in Singapore. It's a special interchange station where you can switch between the North South MRT Line and the Bukit Panjang LRT Line. This station is located in the area called Choa Chu Kang.
This station was the very first place in Singapore where you could change from an MRT train to a LRT train.
Station History
The MRT part of the station first opened on 10 March 1990. It was the last stop on what was then called the "Branch Line." Building the station started a few years earlier, on 15 February 1986.
In 1996, the Branch Line became part of the North South MRT Line. This happened when the Woodlands Extension opened on 10 February 1996. The station's code also changed from B3 to N21.
The LRT part of the station opened later, on 6 November 1999. This was the same day the entire Bukit Panjang LRT line started running. In 2001, the station codes changed again to what they are today: NS4 for the MRT and BP1 for the LRT.
Safety and Upgrades
To make the station safer, special automatic platform gates were added to the North South Line platforms. These gates were installed on 26 August 2011 and started working on 21 October 2011. These gates help prevent people from accidentally falling onto the tracks.
Big fans, called HVLS fans, were also added to the MRT platform. They started working on 10 October 2012 to keep commuters cool. The LRT platforms also got fans starting from 27 September 2015.
In 2012, plans were announced to make the Choa Chu Kang LRT Station even better. Two new platforms were built specifically for people to exit the trains. This helped make more space on the main platform for people waiting to board the trains.
These upgrades also included more fare gates and a new covered walkway to Lot One shopping mall. The staircase between the MRT and LRT stations was also made wider. All these improvements were finished by 2016. A new Exit E was opened, leading directly to Lot One. However, this exit only has stairs, no lift.
The two new LRT platforms (Platforms 3 and 4) started operating on 27 December 2016. If you need a lift to exit the LRT station, you should wait for the train doors to open at the original island platform (Platforms 1 and 2). Stickers are placed on LRT doors to remind passengers about this.
In 2016, Platforms 1 and 2 of the LRT also had half-height platform barriers installed. Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang were the first LRT stations to get these barriers. This was because many people use these stations every day. The newer Platforms 3 and 4 had automatic platform gates installed during their construction.
