Richard Anthony Simpson (born May 28, 1968), better known by his stage name Chubb Rock, is a Jamaican-American rapper. He became famous for his popular hip hop albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Chubb Rock was a very smart student and was even named a National Merit Scholar. He attended the prestigious Brown University but decided to leave to follow his dream of making music.

Musical Career

Rise to Fame in the 1990s

Chubb Rock was discovered by his cousin, DJ and producer Howie Tee. His first album, Chubb Rock, came out in 1988. His second album, And the Winner is... (1989), had a minor hit called "Ya Bad Chubbs." This song was often played on the TV show Yo! MTV Raps.

His 1990 album, The One, was a huge success. It reached No. 13 on the Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart. Three songs from this album, "Treat 'Em Right", "Just The Two of Us", and "The Chubbster", all hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rap Singles chart.

In 1991, he released I Gotta Get Mine, Yo. This album featured guest artists like Grand Puba Maxwell. It also helped the music producers known as Trackmasters become more famous. Chubb Rock also appeared on the song "Back to the Grill" by MC Serch in 1992.

Collaborations and Charity Work

In 1995, Chubb Rock joined the Crooklyn Dodgers, a hip hop group that also included OC and Jeru the Damaja. His backup dancers also formed their own group called A.T.E.E.M.

In 1996, he took part in a special project by the Red Hot Organization. He appeared on the album America is Dying Slowly with other famous artists like Wu-Tang Clan and Coolio. The album was created to teach people about the AIDS epidemic, and it was praised by The Source magazine.

Later Work

In the 2000s, Chubb Rock continued to make music, but not as frequently. He worked with artists like Mr. Len on the song "Dummy Smacks," where he rapped, "Some people thought I was gone... never that!" This showed he was still passionate about hip hop. He also appeared on the song "Wake Up" from the 2007 album House of Stone.

His classic song "Treat 'Em Right" was named number 82 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop in 2008. In the same year, he released a song called "Obama We Believe" to show his support for President Barack Obama.

More recently, Chubb Rock has worked with artists like K'naan and Eric Roberson. In 2011, he and his wife, KeKe Simpson, appeared on the NBC game show The Marriage Ref.

After moving to Atlanta, Chubb Rock started a new career in radio. He co-hosted a popular afternoon radio show that was heard in many cities.
