Anton Ciprian Tătărușanu (born 9 February 1986) is a Romanian former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper.
Ciprian started his career in Romania with clubs like Juventus București, Gloria Bistrița, and FC Steaua București. He played over 180 games for Steaua. In 2014, he moved to Italy to play for Fiorentina. After three seasons, he went to France, playing for Nantes and Lyon. In September 2020, Ciprian returned to Italy to join AC Milan.
Tătărușanu also played for the Romanian national team. He earned 73 caps (appearances) for his country. He was part of the team that played in the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. He retired from the national team when he was 34 years old.

Ciprian Tătărușanu's Club Journey
Starting His Football Career
Ciprian Tătărușanu was born in Bucharest, Romania. He began his football journey at a local club called Juventus. He started playing in the senior league at just 16 years old. Later, he joined Gloria Bistrița. He made his first appearance in Romania's top league, Liga I, on 23 May 2007. His team won that game 1–0 against Unirea Urziceni.
Playing for Steaua București
In May 2008, when Ciprian was 22, he moved to FC Steaua București. The transfer cost €1.5 million. He spent the next season on loan back at Gloria Bistrița. This was because Steaua already had a main goalkeeper at the time.
Ciprian played his first European game on 16 July 2009. It was a 2–0 win against Hungarian team Újpest in the UEFA Europa League. On 2 August, he played his first league game for Steaua. His team won 2–0 against Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț. In August 2010, he helped his team reach the Europa League group stage. He saved two shots in a penalty shootout against Grasshopper.
In June 2011, a club from Italy, Napoli, offered €3 million for Ciprian. However, Steaua București turned down the offer. During his time in Bucharest, he played 187 games. He also helped his team win four national trophies.
Moving to Fiorentina in Italy
Ciprian decided not to renew his contract with Steaua București. He left the club for free and joined the Italian team Fiorentina on 9 June 2014. He signed a five-year contract. He played his first game for Fiorentina on 18 September. It was a 3–0 Europa League win against Guingamp.
He played seven games in that competition. This included a 1–1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. On 6 January 2015, he played his first Serie A match. It was a 0–1 loss to Parma. Ciprian then became the starting goalkeeper for eight games in a row. After the main goalkeeper, Neto, left in July 2015, Ciprian became Fiorentina's top choice. His great performances earned him the 2015 Romanian Footballer of the Year award.
Playing in France for Nantes
In July 2017, Ciprian moved to the French club Nantes. He played his first game for them on 12 August. It was a 0–1 loss to Marseille. Even though they lost, he was named the man of the match for his efforts. In December 2017, he came in second for the 2017 Romanian Footballer of the Year award.
Ciprian played 37 games in his first season with Nantes. All of these were in the Ligue 1 league. He managed to keep twelve clean sheets (games where the opponent didn't score). In April 2019, he saved two penalty kicks in two games in a row.
Joining Lyon
On 13 June 2019, Ciprian decided to stay in France. He joined Lyon as a free agent. He played his first game for Lyon on 18 December. It was a 4–1 win against Toulouse in the Coupe de la Ligue. He only played six games during his year at Lyon. He was mainly a backup goalkeeper to the main starter.
Time with AC Milan
On 12 September 2020, AC Milan announced that Ciprian Tătărușanu was their new player. He signed a three-year deal with the club. Lyon had said the day before that the transfer fee for the 34-year-old was €500,000.
Ciprian was the second-choice goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Donnarumma. He played his first game for Milan on 26 October. It was a 3–3 league draw with Roma. This happened after Donnarumma tested positive for COVID-19. Ciprian also played in a big game called the Derby della Madonnina in January 2021. He was praised for his performance, even though his team lost 2–1 to Inter Milan.
In the next season, Ciprian continued as Milan's backup goalkeeper. This time, he was behind Mike Maignan. On 13 October 2021, Maignan had surgery and was out for two and a half months. With Ciprian in goal, Milan won four league games in a row. On 7 November, Ciprian was Milan's goalkeeper in the Milan Derby. He saved a penalty kick in that game, which ended in a 1–1 draw.
Playing for Abha
On 10 August 2023, the Saudi Arabian team Abha announced that they had signed Ciprian Tătărușanu.
Retirement from Football
On 11 September 2024, Ciprian Tătărușanu announced on his social media that he had retired from playing football.
Ciprian Tătărușanu's International Career
In August 2009, Ciprian was chosen to be part of the Romania squad. His first full international game was on 17 November 2010. It was a 1–1 draw against Italy. Ciprian won a bronze medal at the Cyprus International Football Tournament in 2011.
He was selected for the UEFA Euro 2016 team. He played in all three group stage matches, including the opening game against the host country, France.
On 19 November 2020, Ciprian announced that he was retiring from the national team. This was the day after he earned his 73rd cap for Romania.
