The Clain is a river in western France. It flows through the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This river is a "tributary" of the Vienne river. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one.

About the Clain River

The Clain river is about 144 kilometers (89 miles) long. Its "drainage basin" covers a large area of about 3,217 square kilometers (1,242 square miles). A drainage basin is all the land where water flows into a specific river.

How Much Water Flows?

The amount of water flowing in a river is called its "discharge". The Clain river's average discharge is about 21.5 cubic meters per second (760 cubic feet per second). This measurement is taken near a town called Dissay, which is close to where the Clain joins the Vienne river.

Where the Clain River Flows

The Clain river starts in the Charente department of France. It begins near a place called Chapelle Beau Clain, close to the town of Hiesse. At its start, the river is about 210 meters (689 feet) above sea level. From there, it flows north into the Vienne department.

The river eventually flows into the Vienne river. This happens in the town of Cenon-sur-Vienne, which is near Châtellerault. The Clain river passes through two departments and many towns, or "communes," in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Some of these towns include Poitiers, Saint-Benoît, and Vivonne.

Rivers Joining the Clain

Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Clain. These are its "tributaries."

Here are some of the rivers that join the Clain from its left side:

  • Dive du Sud - 43.9 km (27.3 miles) long
  • Vonne - 72.9 km (45.3 miles) long
  • Boivre - 46.1 km (28.6 miles) long
  • Auxance - 61.6 km (38.3 miles) long
  • Palu - 31.5 km (19.6 miles) long

And here are some that join from its right side:

  • Clouère - 76.3 km (47.4 miles) long
  • Miosson - 33.4 km (20.8 miles) long
