Clay is a city located in the northeastern part of Jefferson County, Alabama. It is part of a larger area called the Birmingham–Hoover–Cullman Combined Statistical Area. The city is managed by a mayor and a city council.
Clay officially became a city on June 6, 2000. Before that, it was known as a census-designated place (CDP). Many people have moved to Clay because it's a good place to live if you work in nearby cities. Its population almost doubled between 2000 and 2010.
The oldest church in Jefferson County, called Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church, is in Clay. This church has been holding meetings since 1806. It was started by early settlers from Scotland and America.
On January 23, 2012, a strong EF3 tornado hit Clay and nearby areas. It damaged or destroyed 231 homes and businesses. The tornado caused a lot of damage in downtown Center Point. Some houses were completely flattened. Trees were broken and pulled out of the ground. Center Point Elementary School also had some damage.
