Clints Crags is a small, interesting hill, also known as a "fell." It is located in the northern part of England's beautiful Lake District. This fell is close to a village called Blindcrake in Cumbria. Even though it's not a huge mountain, Clints Crags is special. It was written about by a famous walker and author, Alfred Wainwright, in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It's a great place for a pleasant walk with nice views.

Exploring Clints Crags

Clints Crags is about 804 feet (245 m) high. It offers a nice and easy walk to its top from the village of Blindcrake. The side of the crags that rises from the Isel valley is much steeper. However, there are no walking paths to the crags from the bottom of that valley.

A Special Place for Nature

Near the top of Clints Crags, you can find an old limestone quarry. This quarry is now a very important natural area. It is called a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it is protected because it is home to a rare type of newt. These newts breed in the old quarry lakes.

The very top of Clints Crags is also a special place. It has a large area of limestone rocks and flat limestone surfaces called "limestone pavement." This area is also a designated SSSI. The delicate limestone environment supports many rare plants and animals. These species are called "calcareous" because they like soil rich in lime.

Wainwright's Walk

Alfred Wainwright described a circular walk around Clints Crags starting from Blindcrake. When he wrote his book in 1974, he mentioned some difficulties. He said that barbed wire and other things made the path hard to follow. He even joked that only "gymnasts" could get through! Luckily, since he wrote that, the barbed wire has been removed. Now, the path to the top is clear and easy to follow for everyone.

Other Places Called Clints Crags

It's interesting to know that there are other places with the same name. You can find another Clints Crags in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. This one is just south of Leighton Reservoir. There is also a Clints Crags above Ireshopeburn in Weardale, County Durham.
