Clotilde Marie Pascale di Savoia, Princess of Venice, born Clotilde Marie Pascale Courau on April 3, 1969, is a talented French actress. She was married to Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, who is a member of the House of Savoy. His grandfather, Umberto II, was the last king of Italy. Clotilde and Emanuele Filiberto were married from 2003 until 2021.

Clotilde Marie Pascale Courau was born in Levallois-Perret, France. Her father, Jean-Claude Courau, is an engineer. Her mother, Catherine Marie Antoinette du Pontavice des Renardières, was a school teacher. Clotilde's mother's family is part of an old French nobility group, with roots going back to the 13th century. Her grandfather, Count Pierre François Marie Antoine du Pontavice des Renardières, was a respected officer and a former Mayor of Merry-la-Vallée.

Clotilde has three younger sisters named Christine, Camille, and Capucine. When they were children, the Courau sisters lived in different places, including Paris, Egypt, and Benin. They were raised in the Roman Catholic faith.

Clotilde's Acting Career

Clotilde Courau has had a successful acting career. In 1991, she was nominated for a César, which is a very important film award in France, for Most Promising Actress. She also won a European Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Le petit criminel (1990).

She later performed on stage with famous actor John Malkovich in a play called A Slip of the Tongue. She also appeared in the movie Map of the Human Heart. In 1995, she won the Prix Suzanne Bianchetti, another award for promising young actresses. She was nominated for two more César awards in 1996 for the film Élisa. In 1998, she was recognized as one of Europe's "Shooting Stars" for her talent. In 2000, she won the Prix Romy Schneider. For her contributions to the arts, she was made a Dame of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France in 2007.

Her Marriage and Family Life

Clotilde Courau announced her engagement on July 10, 2003. On September 25, she married Emanuele Filiberto, Prince of Venice. Their wedding took place at the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome, Italy. She wore a beautiful wedding gown designed by Valentino.

Clotilde and Emanuele Filiberto have two daughters:

  • Princess Vittoria Chiara Cristina Adelaide Maria, born on December 28, 2003, in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Princess Luisa Giovanna Bianca Agata Gavina Maria, born on August 16, 2006, also in Geneva, Switzerland.

In March 2025, Prince Emanuele Filiberto shared that he and Clotilde had separated in 2021.

A Rose Named After Her

In 2009, a special rose was named after Clotilde Courau. It was created by a rose grower named Fabien Ducher. This was done to celebrate the 500,000th visitor to the Jardins de l'Imaginaire, a beautiful garden in Terrasson-Lavilledieu, France.

Clotilde's Political Views

Clotilde Courau has also shared her thoughts on important world issues. In December 2023, she joined 50 other filmmakers in signing an open letter. This letter was published in a newspaper called Libération. It asked for a ceasefire and an end to harm against people in the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. It also called for help to reach Gaza and for the release of people held captive.
