The Cochranella resplendens is a type of frog that belongs to the Centrolenidae family. It is often called the resplendent Cochran frog or resplendent glassfrog. This frog gets its name, resplendens, from a Latin word meaning "to glitter." This is because it looks a bit like a jewel.
You can find this special frog in the upper Amazon Basin. This includes parts of southwestern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, northern Peru (in the Loreto and San Martín areas), and Bolivia (in the La Paz region). There have also been a few sightings in the Cordillera Central in Antioquia, Colombia, and in Amapá, northern Brazil.
What Does It Look Like?
Male Cochranella resplendens frogs are quite small. They measure about 27 millimeters (just over an inch) from their snout to their rear end. Scientists do not yet know the size of the female frogs.
Their snout looks round when you view it from above. It slopes gently when seen from the side. The frog's eardrum, called the tympanum, is visible. However, it is the same color as the skin around it.
The frog's fingers are partly webbed, like a duck's foot. Its toes are even more webbed. The back of the frog, called the dorsum, is dark green. It has many small white or bluish-white dots. The underside of the frog is mostly white. But the back part is clear, like glass. This is why some people call them "glassfrogs." The frog's eye, or iris, is a whitish-cream to beige color. It has a fine gray or brown pattern on it.
Where It Lives and How We Protect It
The Cochranella resplendens frog lives in tropical lowland rainforests. It can be found in both untouched and regrowing forests. It also lives in forests near the Andes mountains. These frogs like to be on plants close to moving water.
When it is time to lay eggs, the female frog lays them on leaves. These leaves are usually found above streams. When it is not breeding season, the frog might live high up in the forest trees.
This frog is considered a rare species. Its home is threatened by habitat loss, which means its natural living areas are disappearing. Its habitat is also becoming broken up into smaller pieces. However, it is possible that the frog is not as rare as we think. It might just be hard for scientists to find and observe them.
