Discovering Cockeysville's Past
Cockeysville got its name from the Cockey family. They were important in starting the town. Thomas Cockey moved to the area in 1725.
Joshua Frederick Cockey built one of the first homes in 1798. He also built the first hotel in 1810. Later, his son, Judge Joshua F. Cockey, built the train station in the 1830s. This station was a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Civil War Events in Cockeysville
Cockeysville saw some action during the American Civil War. In 1864, Confederate soldiers came through the town. They wanted to cut off Baltimore and Washington.
These soldiers destroyed telegraph lines and railroad tracks. They also burned a bridge over the Gunpowder Falls.
Growing After the War
After the Civil War, Joshua F. Cockey III helped the town grow even more. He started the National Bank of Cockeysville in 1891. He also built many homes along York Road.
Some historic buildings in Cockeysville are recognized nationally. Stone Hall was listed in 1973. Baltimore County School No. 7 was added in 2000.

The Grand Lodge of Maryland
The Grand Lodge of Maryland is located in Cockeysville. It's a large campus for the Masons, a fraternal organization. The campus has a castle-like building called Bonnie Blink. This building is a retirement home for Masons and their families.
The Grand Lodge also has the Freemason's Hall. Inside, you can find the Maryland Grand Lodge Museum. This museum has cool historical items. It includes the desk where George Washington resigned his military commission. There's also a rare Latin Bible from 1482.
Local Business and Industry
Cockeysville is known for its Texas Quarry. This quarry has been around since the 1800s. It produces limestone and marble.
Marble from the Quarry
The marble from the Texas Quarry was used for the Washington Monument. It made up the whiter, lower part of the monument. Later, a different quarry provided stone for the top part.
Local marble was also used in 1836 for railroad tracks. It was an experiment to use marble instead of wood. This happened on the Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad.

Cockeysville is located north of the Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695). It sits along Interstate 83 and York Road.
To its east is the Loch Raven Reservoir. Timonium is to its south. Rural Baltimore County is to its west. Most of the shops and businesses are along York Road.
The total area of Cockeysville is about 29.9 square kilometers. Most of this area is land.

Public Transport Options
The Maryland Transit Administration's Light RailLink train goes through Cockeysville. The Warren Road stop serves the area.
Bus Route 93 also runs along York Road and other local streets.
Historic Northern Central Railway
A long time ago, the Northern Central Railway served the area. This railway was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Many passenger trains traveled through Cockeysville.
President Abraham Lincoln rode this railway. He passed through Cockeysville on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address in 1863. Later, in 1865, Lincoln's funeral train also traveled through Cockeysville.
Today, the Light RailLink uses part of the old railway path. The northern part is now a walking and biking trail.
