The Cold River is a river in western New Hampshire in the United States. It is about 22.6 miles (36.4 kilometers) long. This river is a tributary, which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger one. The Cold River flows into the Connecticut River, which then travels all the way to Long Island Sound.

Where the Cold River Flows

The Cold River starts from Crescent Lake. This lake is located in the northeastern part of Acworth. The river first flows east into the town of Lempster.

Then, it turns south and goes back into Acworth. A stream called Dodge Brook joins the Cold River. After this, the river turns west and makes its way towards the Connecticut River. Along its path, it passes through several villages. These include South Acworth, Alstead, and Drewsville. The Cold River finally meets the Connecticut River just south of Bellows Falls, Vermont, and North Walpole, New Hampshire.

Flooding in 2005

In October 2005, there was a lot of rain in the area. This caused the Cold River and its smaller streams to flood. The flooding caused serious damage to buildings and roads. The towns most affected were Alstead, Acworth, and Walpole.

Streams Joining the River

Many smaller streams, called tributaries, flow into the Cold River. They add water to the river as it flows. Here are some of them, listed from where they join the river first to last:

  • Dodge Brook (joins from the east, near East Acworth)
  • Honey Brook (joins from the southeast, between East Acworth and South Acworth)
  • Bowers Brook (joins from the north, in South Acworth village)
  • Great Brook (joins from the south, below South Acworth)
  • Warren Brook (joins in Alstead)
  • Great Brook (another one, joins from the north, in Langdon)
