Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) is a very large construction company. It is one of the biggest in the Middle East. CCC is also among the top 25 international contractors in the world.
The company has offices and projects in over 40 countries. In 2023, about 36,000 people worked for CCC. Most of its business, about 80%, is in the Middle East. CCC was working on 40 projects around the world in 2019.
CCC started in 1952. It is a private company. They offer services like managing projects, engineering, and building things. They work on projects from the Middle East to Africa, Australia, and even Papua New Guinea.
History of CCC
Starting the Company
In 1941, a man named Hasib Sabbagh finished university. He wanted to start his own business. In 1948, he moved to Beirut. Many of his family members were already there. Hasib started a company with his brother-in-law, Said Khoury. They also worked with other business people. They named it Consolidated Contractors Company.
The first office was in Homs, Syria. Later, it moved to Beirut. Hasib Sabbagh, Said Khoury, and Kamel Abedelrahman became the main owners. They wanted to create a strong Arab construction company.
Early Big Projects
In 1950, CCC won a big job. They built pipelines from Kirkuk in Iraq to Baniyas in Syria and Tripoli in Lebanon. Two years later, in 1952, CCC got another important contract. They worked with Bechtel-Wimpey in Aden. They built a large oil refinery and a camp for workers.
A year later, CCC started projects in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar. In 1973, CCC helped start the National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC). This company provides services for oil and gas industries. NPCC is still very successful today.
Moving Headquarters and Growing
In 1975, there was a civil conflict in Lebanon. CCC moved its main office to London. Then in 1976, it moved again to Athens, Greece. In the same year, one of the founders, Abd al-Rahman, sold his shares. Sabbagh and Khoury became the sole owners.
In the 1980s, CCC changed its structure. The owners wanted to grow the company even more. They aimed to work in Europe, the United States, and Asia. CCC bought several companies. They bought Underwater Engineering, a British firm. This company worked on underwater oil projects. They also bought ACWa, an environmental company. CCC also got SICON, an Italian company. SICON specialized in projects related to oil. Later, they bought the Morganti Group, a construction company in the United States.
To do different kinds of projects, CCC partnered with Canadian OXY. They found a lot of oil in Masila, South Yemen. This was a very successful discovery.
In 1990, there was a conflict in Kuwait. This made things difficult for CCC's work in the Persian Gulf. They had to move all their employees out of Kuwait. But by the mid-1990s, CCC became strong again. They managed to get through the tough economic times. Today, CCC is a big and varied international construction company.
In 2019, CCC specialized in many areas. These include building large civil structures and buildings. They also work on industrial plants, marine projects, and pipelines.
Amazing Projects by CCC
CCC has built many different kinds of projects. These include oil and gas plants, refineries, and pipelines. They also build power plants, water treatment plants, airports, and seaports. They construct roads, dams, and even tall skyscrapers.
Pipelines and Energy
CCC built the Azerbaijani part of the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline. This pipeline is about 1,768 kilometers (1,099 miles) long. It carries crude oil from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It connects Baku, Azerbaijan, to Ceyhan, Turkey, passing through Tbilisi, Georgia. CCC was in charge of building a large part of this pipeline.
In Kazakhstan, CCC worked with another company called Saipem. They built important parts of the Karachaganak field. This project was worth about 1.1 billion dollars. It included building a production unit, gas processing plant, and a long pipeline.
CCC also helped build the Offshore Associated Gas Project in Abu Dhabi. They worked on the Habshan Facilities. They also built the world's largest ethylene cracker there.
Famous Buildings and Structures
CCC built the $1-billion Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi. This huge palace is where the president and other important leaders have their offices. The palace area is very large, covering 1,500,000 square meters. It includes the palace itself, a mosque, and other buildings. The project also involved building a long seawall and moving a lot of earth.
CCC is also helping to build the Riyadh metro in Saudi Arabia. This is a big public transport project.
In Abu Dhabi, CCC worked on The Landmark tower. This tower was the second tallest in Abu Dhabi when it was finished in 2011. It is 324 meters tall. They also worked on the Khalifa Port Shah Sulfur Station & Pipelines.
In Qatar, CCC built the Khalifa Sports Hall in Doha. This sports hall is the world's largest air-conditioned indoor sports facility.
CCC also built the Nile Corniche Project in Cairo, Egypt. This was one of the biggest construction projects in Egypt. They also built the Ritz Carlton hotel in Doha.
The Bethlehem Convention Palace is a project CCC invested in. It includes historic pools, a castle museum, and an amphitheater. The amphitheater can hold almost 1,500 people.
Record-Breaking Projects
CCC completed the world's largest gas to liquids (GTL) project. This was the Qatargas 3 & 4 LNG Plant in Qatar. CCC has now completed 17 LNG (liquefied natural gas) facilities. This is about 30% of all LNG facilities in the world! This makes them the most experienced LNG construction company globally.
The Dubai Mall was built by CCC. It is the largest shopping center in the world. The mall area is huge, about the size of 50 soccer fields. It has 1,200 stores. The mall also has the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. This aquarium has a 270-degree walk-through tunnel. It also has the world's largest viewing window. This window even set a Guinness World Record! The mall also has an Olympic-sized ice rink and a massive cinema.
Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University in Saudi Arabia is another huge project. CCC worked on its infrastructure. It is one of the ten largest universities in the world. It is also the largest university only for women. This university is the first "green campus" in Saudi Arabia. It covers 8,000,000 square meters. It can hold up to 40,000 students and 4,000 employees.
In 2019, CCC highlighted some of its most important projects. These included the Dubai Mall and the Abu Dhabi International Airport – Midfield Terminal Building. They also mentioned the Riyadh Metro Project and their work on LNG facilities. They build residential towers, hotels, power stations, and many other important structures worldwide.
Airport Projects
CCC has been a key player in building many major airports.
Abu Dhabi International Airport
The Midfield Terminal of the Abu Dhabi International Airport was a huge project. It cost US$3.2 billion. CCC worked on this with TAV and Arabtec. The terminal building is 700,000 square meters. It will more than double the airport's passenger capacity. It will be able to handle 47 million passengers each year.
Muscat International Airport
CCC also worked on the Muscat International Airport expansion in Oman. This project cost millions of dollars. It increased the airport's capacity by 12 million passengers per year. CCC worked with Turkey's TAV on this US$1.3 billion contract. They built a new airfield, refurbished the old one, and constructed roads and bridges.
Hamad International Airport
CCC was very involved in building the new Hamad International Airport in Qatar. They built the air traffic control tower and its support buildings. They also constructed fire stations, administrative buildings, and a medical center. They built the general aviation hangar and the waste handling facility.
Other International Airports
CCC was part of a group that built the new Tripoli International Airport in Libya. This project was worth US$2 billion. The two terminals will cover 325,000 square meters. They will be able to handle up to 20 million passengers every year. CCC is also building a new passenger terminal at the Sabha Airport in Southern Libya.
Between 1994 and 2000, CCC worked with Hochtief to build the Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon. This project cost US$490 million.
In Papua New Guinea, CCC built the Komo Airport and Infrastructure. They worked with McConnell Dowell. This airport is 1,600 meters above sea level. Its runway is 3.2 kilometers long. It is designed for very large cargo planes, like the Antonov An-124 Ruslan. These planes bring in big equipment for gas projects in the area. The airfield also helps fly in workers for future projects.
