The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (often called CEDAW) is a very important international agreement. It was created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 1979. This agreement officially started on September 3, 1981.

CEDAW's main goal is to stop all unfair treatment, or discrimination, against women. It works to make sure women have their human rights and freedom just like men. It aims for true equality between genders in all areas of life.

By 2015, 189 countries had agreed to follow this Convention. This means they promised to work towards its goals. A few countries had not yet agreed to it. These included Iran, Nauru, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tonga, the United States, and Vatican City.

What is Discrimination Against Women?

Discrimination against women means treating women unfairly just because they are women. This can happen in many ways. For example, it might mean not letting girls go to school. Or it could be paying women less money for the same job as a man. CEDAW works to stop all these kinds of unfair actions.

Why is CEDAW Important?

CEDAW is often called an "international bill of rights for women." It helps countries understand what they need to do. They must make sure women have equal rights in areas like education, health, and work. It also covers rights in marriage and family life.

How Countries Agree to CEDAW

When a country "ratifies" CEDAW, it means they officially agree to follow its rules. They promise to change their own laws and policies. This helps them make sure women in their country are treated fairly. Countries also report regularly to the United Nations. They explain how they are working to improve women's rights.

What Rights Does CEDAW Cover?

CEDAW covers many different rights for women. It aims to ensure women have equal chances in all parts of life.

Equal Rights in Education

This means girls and women should have the same chance to go to school. They should be able to learn and get an education. This includes primary school, high school, and even college.

Equal Rights in Health Care

Women should have access to good health services. This includes doctors, hospitals, and medicines. It also covers special health needs for women.

Equal Rights in Work and Jobs

CEDAW says women should have the same job opportunities as men. They should get equal pay for equal work. They should also be safe from unfair treatment at their jobs.

Equal Rights in Public and Political Life

Women should be able to vote and run for office. They should have a say in how their country is run. This means they can be leaders, politicians, or judges.

Equal Rights in Marriage and Family

Women should have equal rights within their families. This includes decisions about marriage, divorce, and raising children. They should also have control over their own bodies and health choices.
