Converse is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It is about 15 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. In 2020, about 27,466 people lived there. Converse is part of the larger San Antonio area.

History of Converse

Converse is located on Farm to Market Road 1976. This road is about thirteen miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. The city is named after Major Converse. He was the chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1877, he bought land that included the town's location.

A post office opened in Converse in 1878. By 1885, about thirty people lived there. In 1896, the town had a saloon, two cotton gins, and a grocery store. The community was first settled by German farmers. It is said to have the oldest 4-H Club in Texas. A singing group called the Salatrillo Liederkranz was also very active.

In 1946, Converse had 175 people. By 1965, it had grown to 900 residents and twenty-two businesses. Over time, Converse became a suburb of San Antonio. In the 1980s, many new families moved to the area. This helped Converse become a diverse and growing community. By 1990, the population was 8,887. In 2000, it reached 11,508 people and had 390 businesses.

In 2017, Converse planned to expand its city limits. This plan would add about 12 square miles of land. This new area is near Randolph Air Force Base. The expansion would happen in stages until 2033. If completed, Converse would become three times larger. This would bring city services to more people in the county.
