History of Coon Rapids

Early Trails and Industries

In 1835, a path called the Red River Ox Cart Trail was created. It helped connect Minneapolis and Anoka for trade and military use. The first businesses in Coon Rapids grew up around this trail.

One important business was the Anoka Pressed Brick and Terra Cotta Company. Dr. D.C. Dunham started it in 1881. The place where they dug up clay, known as the "Clay Hole," is still a reminder of the city's past. Today, the old Red River Ox Cart Trail is called Coon Rapids Boulevard. It is still a very important road for businesses.

The Coon Rapids Dam

In 1912, work began on the Coon Rapids Dam. Many workers and engineers came to the area. This caused the city's population to grow to over 1,000 people. The dam was finished in 1914. It provided power for the region for many years.

Later, in 1969, the dam was sold. It became part of the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. This park is a great place for outdoor activities.

Becoming a City

When the dam was built, Anoka Township changed its name to Coon Creek Rapids. Later, it was shortened to Coon Rapids. In 1959, the people of Coon Rapids voted to become an official city.

The city has grown a lot since then. In 1959, about 14,000 people lived there. By 2022, the population was more than 62,785. This makes it the 15th largest city in Minnesota.

Several main roads pass through the city. These include U.S. Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highways 47 and 610.

Coon Rapids also has a train station called Coon Rapids Riverdale Station. It is part of the Northstar Commuter Rail line. This train connects the northwest suburbs to downtown Minneapolis.
