Exploring Cooper's Natural Beauty
The Mississippi River has a special part here called the Mississippi River Gorge. It's unique because it's a deep, narrow valley that the river carved out.
How the Gorge Was Formed
Thousands of years ago, the river slowly cut this gorge. This happened as St. Anthony Falls moved upstream. The falls finally stopped in downtown Minneapolis. This was due to engineering work during the city's flour milling boom. Today, the Mississippi River Gorge is a protected natural landscape. This means it's kept safe for everyone to enjoy.
