Cooperstown is a small city located in Griggs County, North Dakota, in the United States. It's the main town, or county seat, for Griggs County. In 2020, about 983 people lived there. The city was started way back in 1882.

History of Cooperstown

Cooperstown is named after R. C. Cooper. He was a "bonanza farmer," which means he owned a very large farm. In 1880, he built the first wood-frame house in the area. Before that, most people lived in sod houses, covered wagons, tents, or log cabins.

The city of Cooperstown was officially planned on October 26, 1882. This happened just before the railroad tracks reached the area.

Becoming the County Seat

On November 7, 1882, the leaders of Griggs County decided to make Cooperstown the county seat. This meant important county records and offices would be moved there. Before this, the county records were kept in a town called Hope, North Dakota.

The people of Hope didn't want to give up the county seat. They refused to hand over the records to Cooperstown. So, the County Commissioners had to take the records by force.

Later, an armed group from Hope managed to get the records back. But in early 1883, a new county called Steele County was created, and Hope became its county seat. After an election on June 2, 1883, Hope finally returned Griggs County's records to Cooperstown. The Griggs County Courthouse was built in 1884.
